Today I was hoping to go fishing with one of my buddies from Springer Season. Yesterday was prep day: buying all the safety equipement, talked to a tech guy about a cracked VHF antenna, ect. Even regreased the bearing buddies, zurt fittings on the motors and steering, redid the anchor system and added an anchor dirk. Also had the wiring recrimped and enclosed with shrink sleeves. Wouldn't you know, at 7am this morning, tested the big motor with an earmuff thing and the waterhose. Uh-oh! The big motor would not start up..Duh, forgot the kill switch. Try again! Well, to make a long story short, the bendix of the starter kept hanging up on the flywheel and would not drop back in place. Was also pretty darn warm to the touch. I think the starter is toast. :depressed: Darn, this is Sunday and I really doubt if there is a Marine Parts house open. Ditto for Monday since it is a Holiday. Probably repaint the big motor cowling..Does anyone know where to pick up this part without paying an arm and leg? :bigshock: I am guessing the part is close to $150.00 or so. Ah, the wonders of a new owner of a boat... :help: :hearton:judyfish99

Judy,
Remove the bendix and check the threads. You also want to see if it spins as one unit or if the bottom part is turning while the gear is not. You may only need to replace the Bendix, a $25.00 part.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, Otter! Will take the starter in to be bench tested, but not today,,It's a holiday. I was afraid it may be the bendix..Thanks so much, again.... :hearton: judyfish99 (I think it will be engine cowling painting time)

Judy you might want to call an outboard salvage business. I know there is one off of foster. They might be able to hook you up with a used starter quite inexpensively. If you want to go new try mercurymarine online.

If you need to replace the starter look online for one. Dont buy one from any local marine parts houses, they charge way too much. My buddy needed to replace the starter on his 115 Merc, the local marine place wanted $379.00 for it.. He shopped around online and found one for $139.00, this included shipping and a 1 year warranty . It seems like most of the shops around here really gouge the customers.

For the cheapest marine parts try your local N**A auto parts store. Probably the largest marine parts system in the US and they dont rip you off like the marine stores. Marine dealer wanted $ 179 for my 50 hp impeller, N**A sold the same part for $14. Try them.

SuperPanga, thanks so much for the advice. I think anyone that is a marine mechanic on weekends would have made out very well financially. Unfortunatly everyone was closed. Thinking of visiting that place on Tuesday morning for the starter. This weekend was the pits!!(but got alot done). :hearton: judyfish99
