Hello everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been flyfishing for about 5 years and tying for about three. Although, whether I not I have improved is debatable.

I recently decided to take up steelheading and was hoping to make my first trip to the Sandy in about a week and a half and hoping you might help me out with where to access good holes. I'm not asking for anybodies zipperlip spots, just where a beginner can get his feet wet and hopefully get into some backing. :help:

Thanks!

Welcome LunkerFish!

Okay, the Sandy in less than 1000 words. Please note, these are generalizations...

Below I-84: the fish are just passing through as the bottom is mostly sand with a few notable exceptions. Good water for sitting in a lawn chair and plunking bait. Bad water for flies as the fish don't really hold there.

Dabney to I-84: Some good stretches along the road. You'll be able to identify them by the obvious car pullouts. Dabney has a couple of good spots that mostly come alive when the flows pick up.

Top of Oxbow to Dabney: Drift boat prime territory, although you can only fish from a boat from the powerlines down (in Oxbow). Some of my favorite spots are on the lower portion of Oxbow Park, mainly because of the light use from other fishers.

Dodge to Oxbow: Some of the most killer spots on the whole river, but many require sizeable hikes and/or aggressive wading. Dodge Park and Pipeline hole can be combat fishing zones when the winter steelhead are running thick.

Hatchery/Cedar Creek to Dodge: Cedar Creek and the hatchery area have a lot of fish as they all pile up where they were released as fingerlings. Some crazy crowds around Cedar Creek, and at times the snagging Mecca for the Portland metropolitan area. Some very good fishing here especially if you're willing to walk downstream away from the madness.

Above Marmot Dam: Don't know much about it from a fishing perspective. It is really pretty.
