hello everyone,
I am staying on a place right on the river, real close to sunriver, for a few days, and would like to get into some fish...

I am an extreme newbie to moving water fly fishing (I am usually floating on merrill nightly, and I have only done that for a few months  ), but would love some pointers, maybe even some good locations I can wet a line....

you can PM me if you would like....

any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

thanks in advance!

mike

mrgamby,

Did you bring the float tube? If so, head up to East Lake or one of the many, many, many lakes on the Cascade Lakes Hwy, you're right there, not much driving and the scenery is pretty great if you go up around Bachelor and South Sister.

- or -

Go to the Sunriver Fly Shop in the business park (across the street from Taco Bell) and have 'em hook you up for the Fall River, or whatever else they recommend.

There's almost too many choices....

yeah, don't bother fishing the deschutes there at sunriver. too many productive spots nearby as mentioned above.

If you have access to a boat. I *would* fish one of the floats that ends up in sunriver. I went to the fall sunday and it was absolutely dead. no insects, no risers, no fish. of course this happens often. This was after two days of rain, and seemingly great conditions.
hosmer and crane are in the midst of a blue green algae bumper crop.
If you have a boat, crane might do you well.
East is fishing well from what I hear. still need a float tube at least.
I have had great success between lapine state park and the sunriver marina this time of year. mostly with streamers and a sinktip. if you have a house, I bet you have a mile of access since the neighbors might not be around.

If you have no boat, hard tellin.
not a whole lot of great bank access. although the river that passes through crosswater golf course is underfished.

good luck. august is a tough month.

thanks for all the great info guys..
I will be there labor day weekend, so It might be a zoo?
I also will be bring my kayak(s) too... so it looks like some of the lake choices might be good ideas..

I will probably be in the flyshop in sunriver first thing saturday morning!!

If you bring your kayak, fish big streamers right at dawn/dusk at the mouth of the Spring River across from Sunriver. There are some big browns lurking in that area. Also take your boat up to Hosmer. The Atlantics love fast moving fly so you can cast out with a white or red bugger, put the rod in the cockpit and paddle around the lake as quick as you can. On labor day you may be running slalom around a thousand float tubers but it can be really productive.
Good luck!

I have been going to sun river the last 2 years in Sept and will be heading there again this year (last 2 days of Sept and the first of oct.).

Anyway, don't overlook the little fly shop in the village next to the market. I found that they where much friendlier and freer with info than the shop near the Taco bell.

A place that you should try is Big and Little Lava lakes. It is about a 30 min drive but I have done much better there than floating thru sunriver.

I think you will find that the d is overfished and has smaller (4" fish). Also, if you do float the river, it is a much longer float then it looks. Check a map.

We put in at the highway bridge and took out at the restaurant.

You may want to contact Fall River Guy and see what he has to say.
