While motoring at low tide near the HMSC docks, I hooked a sunken crab float on my motor. It was way out in the channel in about 42 feet of water. When we cleared it, I pulled in a new looking crab trap with no bait (or crabs) and the line heavily laden with grass. Found on Saturday at about 10:00 AM.

If you can identify the float color and what was written on it, I will hold it here at my home in South Beach so you can pick it up the next time you come to Newport.

Here's a little story

I was crabbing on the 14th and 15th. The first day we only went out for about 3 hours. This big ol' jet boat kept acting all erratic, following us around and stuff. Then, they started buzzing us. I have a flat bottom sled, so that was no fun getting waked out, splashing over the sides, etc. Any then they come up straight at us full throttle after 15 or 20 minutes of the prior mentioned behavior. Two guys came up to the bow and started glaring at us and yelling about us stealing their crab pots. (we were the only two boats left right before dark). Thought we were going to have to prepare to be boarded. Any way the guys were obviously drunk and had come in off the big P after a long day, so we eventually convinced them it wasn't us. It was even funnier because a rental boat full of peoiple had asked us earlier that day about crab pots, because they had lost two of the rental ones. I have also lost a grand total of 3 traps there over the past two years.

And I blame short ropes, and seaweed!!

So.. my point? Good luck finding the actual owner.

Bigjim 421,

I know about how hard it might be to get it back to the owner, but... I want to try.

It was in deep water and we never saw the float until we hit the rope and our prop wound it up. It had probably 10 lbs or more of grass on it.

I had to run around on the kicker motor while my buddy unwound the rope off the big prop and cleared the mess.

I'll keep trying here.
