I know this seems trivial, but with all those cases of fresh canned tuna stacked up, I need some variety to spice things up a bit :bigshock: I love tunafish sandwiches though, so I think I'll have little trouble in polishing off what I have. Here's one that was passed on to me by an old salt that's been pretty good:
Tuna
Best Foods Mayo - I like a lot, but some like it drier
1 Tablespoon Boetjke's Stoneground Mustard or similar
2 tablespoons Dill relish
Green onion, finely chopped
The secret with this one is to BUTTER your bread first. I like Cannon Beach Milk and Honey bread, but will eat whatever we have available (including that 84 grain wheat crud the wife always buys...)
Serve with Tims new Wasabi Potato Chips!
If this doesn't make Tuna as unhealthy as a cheeseburger, I don't know what does, but it's GOOD!
Anyone else have some killer tunafish sandwich recipe's they'd like to pass along?

I have used olive oil to moisten things up and it works great, and it is healthier than the mayo...

OB turned me on to a Tuna spread that was great and oh so simple. Tuna and 2000 Island dressing (that Paul Newman stuff). It's good and the dressing had all the good stuff all premixed for ya!
Man- all of a sudden I'm hungry.

yep Im getting very hungry!!!
The wife is 'lergic to eggs, so no mayo here, we use light sour cream instead. then prep just like you would any other time, except add a tad more mustard for tang.
yummmm

Mayo, pickle relish, and Italian salad dressing mixed to taste, and a spinkle of pepper. A bit of lettuce and tomato sliced thin.

Yup, it's awesome, but I can't take credit. That's a Puffin trick that I learned from Pilar. I don't bother to chop veggies and dirty dishes anymore. Pop open jar, drain, squirt in dressing, mix and serve.
But if you insist on chopping veggies and dirtying dishes, Pilar came up with a great concoction involving deli mustard, mayo, pickle relish, onions, minced garlic, horseradish and black pepper. John? Did I forget anything? - Edited to add garlic, I knew I forgot something! And like John says, add mayo last to keep it from getting runny in the fridge or making bread mushy if you're making them "to go."
If you want a good party platter idea, squirt deli mustard all randomly on a large flour tortilla. Mix TUNA! with sweet pickle relish (no mayo) and spread on tortilla. Top with thin slivers of kosher dill pickles, chopped lettuce and tomato, sliced olives and pickled peppers (I like the banana peppers), roll, slice and serve. If you don't mix the mayo in, these tend to keep pretty well and don't get all mushy. My kids call this "a party for your taste buds" - and my son doesn't like TUNA! salad.

This all sounds good, but how do you get far enought along to actually make the sandwich. I open the jar, take a bite of the tuna right outta the jar. I open the fridge (with jar in hand) and look for the afor-mentioned ingredients, while taking another bit outta the jar. It's about this time I decide the sandwich is too much trouble, slice a thick slice of cheddar cheese and grab a refreshing beverage then head off to the puter to see what's new w/the Salty Dogs....
PS...the green tabasco goes real well w/the tuna-from-a-jar too. I spose some crackers would be good too, but who has the time?

I got a jar of Keta's smoked/canned salmon not long ago. And it only cost a couple of beers, and some good conversation.
I agree with you M-Y ... why bother with all that work. I ate most of it straight out of the jar, and had some of it with crackers.
If anyone needs a recipe tester, though, I'm happy to receive tuna-in-a-jar-o and take a whack at it, then report back. It will be more work, as M-Y said, but I'll make the sacrifice for you Salty Dogs.

You got it just right, Jen. Just add the mayo last after you mix the other stuff in so it does not get mushy and just enough to make it spread on the bread. Extra horseradish and fresh cracked pepper for me please. Oh and you can substitute Shallots for Onions. NorRivDave liked it this way.
One other sammich you may like is
~Toasted sourdough bread .. homemade, thick sliced if you can get it. Puffin's homemade sourdough is the bomb. You can butter the bread or use mayo but it is not necessary if the fish is not overcooked.
~2 TBS olive oil
~1/2 lb tuna loin, sliced 1/4 to 3/8 inch thin across the grain at a 45 degree angle to make bigger slices.
~Wasabi and stone ground mustard mixed. Heat with Wasabi to taste but be careful!
~Romaine or butter lettuce.
~Garden tomato sliced thin and salted. Yep you guessed it Puffin's garden is a good place to find these.
~Fresh cracked black or green pepper corns.
~Salt
Heat iron skillet real hot. Add oil and sear tuna slices just until they begin to change color at the edges, 90 seconds max. Flip and sear maybe 45 to 60 seconds on other side. It should be brown or better yet dark on each side and a little raw in the middle. By the time you get to eating it will cook clear through. DO NOT OVERCOOK. Hot skillet and short cooking time is the key.
Crack pepper over fish slices on plate and salt to taste. Don't try it yet or you will not have any left for sandwich. Smear wasabi/mustard on one slice of bread and layer tuna slices, lettuce, tomato other slice of toast and eat.
You might be ok the first time your family eats this but the next time drop the plate on the table and back up quick. Count your fingers afterwards. Goes good with tomato soup. The Starkist in the cupboard is good for the cats if they have not yet had the real deal. Cats spoil easily.

Tartar sauce, Diced onions, celery and green olives, mustard. salt and pepper. Spread on toasted Pita bread and top with swiss and parmesan cheese. Put in broiler to melt and brown cheese. It may take a few minutes but it is well worth it.
MY- I sent some of those Wasabi chips to a friend in Delaware and now he wants me to send him a case!

Thanks John, when you mentioned the shallots, I remembered that I forgot garlic in the original recipe. I edited it above.

puffin baking sourdough?? . shirt on or off?? gotta love that big john..
My favorite.
I urge people to give this one a shot.
San Fran sourdough sliced, toasted and lightly buttered.
Tuna.
in a bowl mix Mayo....
Add a good glug of BALSAMIC vinegar. (a must, makes this sandwich awesome)
Fresh dill
chopped garlic.
Diced onion
celery seed
Mix it all up.
Fold in the Tuna...dont mash it up!...leave it chunky.
On the bread, lay some spinach leaves and a thick slice of hothouse tomato and a couple thin slices of tillamook or crackerbarrel sharp cheddar.
Flop the tuna mix on the bread, cover generously with course ground black pepper add the other slice o' sourdough, cut in half. Groan with pleasure.

Guests around my boat and house seem to like my recipe. I have posted it before a few times...
If there are enough comments or interest I'll post it yet again.
Good stuff...
By the way... Be careful opening a jar around Mel...It will dissapear
Okay,
Putting Harry and David's Pepper and Onion Relish in anything and makes it taste better. You guys could probably even eat Quiche if it was serverd with H & D's Pepper and Onion Relish.<g>
Make your tuna salad any way you would like and throw in a couple of scoops of, you got it, Harry and David's Pepper and Onion Relish. It tastes grrrreat!

I understand your problem with not getting the prep done before you get the tuna eaten.
Solution:
Open 2-3 jars at a time.
