On my last TUNA trip with Bait Boy he showed me a great tip on how to Gut and Gill a TUNA at Sea. This played key in getting the TUNA cold quick and not using soooo much ice.

Step 1:
Make a 2" cut up from the Anus

Step 2:
Reach in and hook the hmmm....what ever you call it? The "poop chute"? And break it.

Step 3:
Now seperate the Gills from the Gill Plate. Make sure to cut the gills free on the top and bottom as well. But don't cut too deep into the "Guts".

Step 4:
Grab as much of the Gills as you can and give them a 3/4 twist one direction then 3/4 in the other.

Step 5:
Simply pull the gills slowly out....if done right the "Guts" will follow the gills right out of the fish!

Sorry no pictures of this, a couple of TUNA needed our attention at the end of our lines :hoboy:

Bait Boy has got this down and was taking him less than a minute a fish. With a little practice I was guttn' a fish in just over a minute.

Did I forget anything Rick?

Thanks Rick for a great tip!!!

Great technique and thanks for the photos. Do you still bleed the fish with this technique? :applause:

Blead first then gut and put in chill tank for a while. Then stuff with ice and put in cooler, cover fish with more ice.

yeahs its called "ketaing the fish!(i think?)" Thanks to Keta!!

From my little expieriance, i figured out that reaching into the tuna just to make sure you got all the guts out is a good idea. It should be pretty hollow. Good luck guys!

This is the procedure Bill has tought me. Having the guts out with the fish in the slush box. They will cool much quicker then guts in. And it only takes a minute with practice.
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzz. Can hardly wait for that tune!!! :smash: :smash:

yes it works really well for the big fall chinook and springers but it gets a little more tricky when u start getting into the littler fish like steelhead. there is a lot more skill that is involved in that one. lot more practice.

Now's the time for those of us with not much practice to view this again. Thanks for posting it.
