I just finished up a great little season of sturgeon fishing in the Columbia Estuary.
What made this so fun is all the fish we caught and the groups that caught them. I had lots of father and sons and husbands and wives out, an uncle and nephue team and a few groups of three generations.
There were people that had never been fishing, kids wore out from reeling in fish, sore arms and blistered thumbs.

Fishing for sturgeon in the Estuary of the Columbia is outstanding, it's so rich with food that there are tens of thousands of feeding fish. That translates to lots of action, 20+ fish days are the norm.
We mostly fish them in shallow water, 12 feet or less, and in this shallow water they really put up a fight. Many of them jump and they make screaming long runs.
And sturgeon is great on the table too.
From the beginner to the expert fisherman it's all smiles.

As of July third the estuary will be closed for keeping sturgeon but that doesn't mean you still can't catch and release. Last year I know a few guides that ran some C&R trips and had days of over 50 Fish . No one was out there fishing so the sturgeon were thick as fleas.
As popular as fishing for sturgeon is getting C&R could be the wave of the future. They are great eating and everyone likes to take home some groceries but after all, it takes them over 12 years to reach "keeper" size. What better way to utilize a resource?
I guess we'll keep some when we can and release them too.
If sturgeon fishing in the Columbia Estuary sounds like fun to you give me a call for the catch and release fishing in July or mark your calendar for next year in June when we can keep them. I'm already looking forward to ‘05, as there were a lot of fish that were just under the 45-inch slot limit that will be keepers next year.
