I fish in SE Idaho. A month ago while I fished around the dam, someone got into my cooler and stole my pop. I have been on the alert since, but never thought my fish would be a target for bandits.

So last night I was fishing, and had some pretty good luck. Brought in a 20" rainbow on a Thunderstick. In the bank six feet away was a natural livewell, so I knocked the fish out and rested him in the livewell since it was dark and nearly time to leave.

A few minutes later, I heard some movement near the fish, turned on my flashlight to discover my fish was several feet up the rocky bank. I grew suspicious, because if he flopped, he would have gone down the hill, not up it. I watched the area closely, after restoring the fish to the natural livewell.

Several minutes later, I heard a beer bottle roll down the rocks. I switched on my flashlight to see two glowing eyes encased by the traditional criminal's mask. The eyes disappeared behind a boulder. My fish was gone, and no amount of searching would produce it. I was outwitted by a rodent! A racoon stole my fish! All three and half pounds of it, and that, without a sound.

I have a whole new respect (and disdain) for the racoon. I hope he's happy. That's the last time I let him take my gamefish. Next time, after dark, my catch is going on one of those baskets African women carry around on their heads!

Hey I had a similar experience as that...I was fishing a lake in Central WA, and had a couple trout on a stringer in the water, that I was going to fry up that night...well after fishing for about an hour more I went to pull the stringer up, and looked down and one of the trout was half missing, with the biggest crawdad I had ever seen munchin on the tail end...
Well at least I got trout and crawdad for dinner that night!

Good story PR! Reminds me of the time when I was young and stupid and left a cooler full of fish outside the tent in Island Park (an area with resident Grizzlies). Middle of the night, I hear the cooler being dragged across camp and about s*^t myself. Grabbed the 12 gauge with 000 buck that I was sleeping with and charged out of the tent ready to take on a bear. What do ya know- a derned raccoon was pulling that cooler!! Strong little fellas.

A couple of times, I've had mink on the Deschutes steal a trout that I'd stuck on a forked stick and left at the water's edge. They'll hiss when you come close to reclaim your meal.

Last year, steelie fishin' on the Deschutes, a family of 5 otters went porpoising upstream, then, an hour later, here they come downstream, playing all the way! As I was walking out, I talked to a guy who claimed that an otter had stolen his steelhead off the bank while he was thigh-deep in the river! I think I like my burlap sack!
