OK, I'm new to this. I have picked up a starter salmon/steelhead flyrod and reel at Rosecity flyshop and have some lessons coming up. I thought that the bigger fish would be more rewarding(hence the larger flyrod and reel), but I'm having second thoughts. I think now that I'd like to start with trout and work up to the larger fish. I would really like some help picking a good flyrod and reel to start with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want something good that will last a while, but not high end that will break the bank. There are so many choices and I have no experience, so I thought I'd turn to the more experienced ifishers. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest the Temple Fork Outfitters rods or maybe the Griggs (CustomMade at GI Joes)or Redingtons.
All are good values
PM me if you want to know where to get Temple Fork Outfitters rods.

Thanks for the tip on Griggs. I have two Griggs (NorthXNorthwest) rods that I'm happy with. What about reels though? That's really what I'm having the biggest trouble with. Thanks

You can't go wrong with a Pflueger Medalist. A reel and spare spool can be had for $40; $10 more for rim control capability.

I just picked up a Reddington rod/reel combo RS2 rod and a GD 4-5 reel it came with backin line and leader for 300.00. You also have the choice between black or polished on the reel, and the rod comes in different lengths too. I love it, tried my buddys sage and not a alot of difference except price. He is even thinking about getting one.
