View Full Version : Deschutes Float'n Fly NEXT WEEKEND

Ok Gang. Lets get serious about next weekend the 19 and 20th. Here's what I have so far for SKIPPERS and frontseaters:
RIVERKEEPER: GBS and Agent Z Orange
OTOLITH: Broinlaw
TILLAMOOK CHINOOK: TJ
Bankin: PITTSBURGHD & Co.
Please speak up if you have open seats or if you don't intend to come. Sounds like there are a few people who would like to go along if there are seats.
Each person needs to buy a boater pass for each day. It will cost you $16 bucks and can be purchased on the web HERE. (http://www.boaterpass.com/MainFrameUnSec.asp?BoaterPassID=302696)
SKIPPERS: Each boat needs to have a portable toilet. I called BLM and a 5 gallon bucket with a tight fitting plastic lid (like you buy paint in) fits the requirement. There are fairly ample outhouse opportunies along this float so hopefully we won't need to USE the toilets, but thats up to you...
I propose that we meet at the Warm Springs launch across the street from rainbow market at 8:30 am Saturday morning. If some who is not dragging a boat can drive, then we can drop the boats, some people can stay near them while the tow rigs and the other vehicle shuttle down to TC, then the Spare vehicle drives us all back to WS and away we go.
I think each boat should coordinate what camping gear, food, refreshments, etc that they need amongst themselves. I plan to pack very light since it's only one night and the boat will be full of the boxes of wine that GBS said he is going to bring.
We'll launch, fish, then meet up at some agreed point later in the day to decide where to camp. Sounds like sunday a bunch of us have to get going early. So we'll take out at TC at or before noon and then if anyone wants to keep fishing they can either do the float again or just hit mecca for the rest of the day.
How does this sound?

This will be great. I like doing the shuttle ourselves. We just need to be sure we have one of our troop there with the extra vehicle. The savings will be several hundred dollars.
If I take TJ with me, I'll still have room for one more.
I leave from Southeast Portland, near downtown, so anyone whoever wants to ride with me, let me know. I put new mufflers on the ol' Scout, so earplugs are not as necessary. Just a cell phone and AAA roadside service coverage.

Hmmmm..
I am a little worried about your BLM contact. The state police enforcement officer may not see it the same way as you do about the toilet.
Deschutes potty info (http://www.boaterpass.com/edref/toiletinfo.pdf) (PDF)
It is stating that buckets and bags is not permissable.

24/48,
The BLM office explained things to me and sent me to THIS LINK (http://www.or.blm.gov/Prineville/Deschutes_River/Portable_Toilet_Information.pdf) from the Prineville office website. I'm going to assume they are correct. Others can do as they see fit.

Uh oh. Can't do Sunday at all. My friend Erik has to do kids games on Saturday. So, I'm stuck bankin' it with a friend on Saturday. We'll come up early Saturday Morning and leave that evening without a boat. Oh well. I'll have to wait for the July trip.
:hoboy:
Let me know if you plan to do a lunch or dinner at a certain spot. Perhaps we can hook up for a little gathering? :ooo:

Some guys have dropped out, so we may want to think about consolidating boats? What do you guys think?
REDBULL, are you with us? If you ain't with us, you're against us!!
Also we should all try to get Warm Springs permits so we can fish the Res side of the river. Yah?
Lets do it fellas. I can't wait to get out there and http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/darian/Ifish%20Silly%20pics/whip2.gifhttp://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/darian/Ifish%20Silly%20pics/whip2.gifhttp://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/darian/Ifish%20Silly%20pics/whip2.gifhttp://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/darian/Ifish%20Silly%20pics/whip2.gifhttp://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/darian/Ifish%20Silly%20pics/whip2.gif

RK,
Good idea on the Warm Springs permits. Can they be purchased here in Portland, or do we have to do that in Warm Springs?
How much does the permit cost?

Deep breath Robert :smirk:
Warm Springs passes sell at GI Joes for $8 per day. It's damn expensive to float this river!

Do we have a list of people who DEFINITELY want to go but need an open seat?
Riverkeeper
06-16-2004, 03:39 PM
sounds like 3 boats, 2 open seats.
Who can drive the shuttle rig? We just need one vehicle that can seat 4 and isn't towing a boat over there...

We will be meeting you at WS in the morning. If you have two spots on a boat for the day for Kendal and myself we might be able to do the shuttle thing and pick up our rig at the take out. Do a little inventory and let us know. We are picking up flies tomorrow morning and making plans.

Please see the list on the first post of this thread to see who is coming. I assume each drift boat COULD take three, but that is up to the captains. Mine is full with Skunks and Vegetables
Remember to get your boaters pass, your indian permit (otherwise you can only fish one side of the river), and pack light. I think it's going to be pretty warm over there this weekend (cool at night though).
I fished last friday, and the trout were into the regular assortment of small nymphs. Prince, rockworms, caddis pupae, etc. There were occasional mayfies around and there should be some caddis. The salmonflies were on the way out last week, so I imagine there wont be many left if any this weekend. That doesn't mean you couldn't tempt a trout with a sofa pillow though.
We still need someone to drive a shuttle rig. Anyone?

By the way, directions from Portland:
Take Hwy 26 over Mt. Hood, thru warm springs. Cross bridge over the Deschutes, launch is immediately on your right, across the street from the Rainbow Market and semifunctional gas station.
Be there at 8:30 am, which means probably leaving the metro area at 6.

make sure you have some caddis sparkle pupa in the fly box also.

Man, I sure wish I was going but this weekend is too booked. I hope you guys do this again sometime. I would really really love to go. Let us know next week how it went. Complete with pics would be nice. Good luck and hope you got a strong leader.

I think we're going to do the bank thing and follow you down river. Meet up for a meal perhaps etc... We'll be leaving at 6:30 though. It doesn't take that long to hit W.S. 2 hours? Anyway we'll see you there. Our plans are to hit the OR non-indian side (did I say indian, Native American, Warm Springs Tribal). Let me know if we should grab a pass in case of a free ride to the other side. Otherwise, we'll see you when we see you.

I got a report from DaveG, who fished Mecca yesterday. He said they had good fishing with Green Copper John and Yellow Sally Stonefly nymphs, and a tailless beadhead green nymph with a brown collar (#16). Lots of wind. Few Salmonflies. Water temp was 55 degrees.
I understand we might convoy from Brad's. I like that idea. The ol' Scout is totally reliable, but I'm glad I will be driving in the daylight both ways on this trip.

yep, If anyone wants to leave and convoy from my place in SE portland, that's cool. Otherwise we'll meet at the launch just upstream from the warm springs bridge at 8:30am sat. Right RK?
