Here's a little help for you bankies out there looking to get into a Gator rigged Fshklr style from the bank.
My first choice in bait from may thru June is sandshrimp so here's a little help with the rigging for distance casting sandshrimp or any other bait 3 to 5 inches in length.
Always rig the bait head first if available!!
This system works best with fresh bait..Sandshrimp, Smelt, and Anchovies. If using cured baits, squid, rollmop, or other a piece the size of your pinky finger will do tied several times wrapped with the stretchy thread works great.
The gear used in the first pic are:
1 - 6/0 barbless Gami.
It's tied on 50# dacron with eggloop then to a barrel swivel, back thru the hookeye, back thru the barrel swivel(total of 3 lines now and half hitched all the way back to hook eye.
then wrapped tight in black stretchy thread to create a heavy STIFF 1-1/4" leader.(the use of the black thread is needed to see how your tying the sandshrimp on and what not to cut when removing used baits)
20# lead leader approx 12 to 16 inches in length and 6oz or 8oz pyramid(If your fishing rocks the 20# leader will allow the lead to breakoff when snagged and thus keep your fish).
Be sure to tie a snapswivel in for the pyramid. The brass eye in murder on knots and knot strength.
Your mainline is tied directly to the same eye of the barrel swivel as the 6/0 Gami for direct hooksets!!.
1 roll or tube of white stretchy thread.
And as always my trusty 11', 12', or 13' rods with 25# mainline loaded to full capacity on the reel and cast as far as humanly possible!!.(I carry a water bottle with me and wet the line on the reel prior to each cast to elimate friction) it will give you another 10 to 20 yards depending on reel size and quality.

In the next image you can see where I place the 6/0 gami piercing just below the body and exiting near the head or mouth area. notice the short stiff leader in relation to the sandshrimp..these are the standard size sandshrimp you would use for steelhead.

Next image is the top view of a wrapped sandshrimp ready to fish / cast.

Another view of the wrapped sandshrimp with stretchy thread from the underside...note the several TIGHT wraps made directly onto the stiff black leader under the sandshrimp prior to the tying on the sandshrimp. this is to secure the stretchy thread and sandshrimp from flying off with the enertia of the cast.

Finally anywhere you can stand along the columbia and cast, this will work!!! I have used it at Bonneville, all the way to Astoria and all points in between.
If your not fishing, your not catching!!!
Keep the bait FRESH!!!It MUST be kept cool on ice to prevent softening or spoiling with the lid closed and finally change the bait every 15 mins weather you think it needs it or not!! current rips and destroys bait quickly and removes scent just as fast, and sturgeon love FRESH BAIT!!!!.
Good luck out there!
