My co-worker Dave and I left Portland at noon to catch the elusive Salmon fly hatch on the Deschutes.

Started fishing before 3:00, fished hard, nymphed, dry adult stones, tried bh copper johns in three colors and several sizes, bh pt's, green rock worms, Kauffman stone nymphs in black and brown, hares ears, super prince nymphs, sparkle pupas, and a myriad of other flies in addition to both orange and yellow stone fly adult dries. No nibbles.

Ran into River Keepers dad Richard, never met him before, a great guy. Asked him if he had caught some fish, and he said yes. I went down below him and he caught about 4 or 5 in 30 minutes, then the bite died, he invited me to fish his spot while he took a break. I had one on one a green rock work bh.

Now the good part. I fished my way down to Lewellen's, got there about 7:00, only four others there. A father and his daughter (about 13/14 years)started catching redsides about 7:00 on adult stones. The dad caught about 3 in 15 minutes and the daughter only caught one and lost interest. Dad moved below me immediately hooked up, the daughter brought her rod, one cast and she was also hooked up, seconds later I was hooked up, three on at once.

Then the young girl could do no wrong, she hooked and landed about 5 in the next 30 minutes, dad caught 3 or 4 more. I managed to hook and land about 6 between 13" and 16.5" between 7:15 and 8:30, had another 6 or so on, but I can't seem to keep from wanting to palm the spool, have a reel with a disk drag and I should let the reel do the work. I had probably 15 or 20 takes that never even felt the hook. I was using a foam body golden stone adult about size 4, had a deer hair wing with a white foam under wing.

You will all be interested to know that the dad and daughter did not have waders and never got in the water. Fishing close to the bank really works. It was great to see a teenager having a ball fishing with bugs.

I hadn't seen my buddy Dave since about 6:00 and assumed he had been catching them, but he hadn't had a bite. He is really a good fly fisher. I said, get in the water cuz it has been pretty darn good here. I watched him immediately catch about 15" or so and break off a huge fish he had on for several minutes. He was fishing 5X, he can't seem to break his Colorado habits.

Now you did it. You got me thinking about STONES again. I can't wait for 4th of July. That's the magic time with both Salmonflies and big Golden Stones hatching on the South Fork of the Boise. If anyone wants a great trip, bring your 'toon boat, and a box of big stone immitations. Probably not as good as the Deschutes, but it's still a gas!

Nice report. Sounds like you got a lot of practice tying on flies in the early part of the day.
