Was wondering for those of us who do not tie flies, where you could buy good quality flies for less then $2.25 a fly?
I look on the net for an hour and found sites that sell flies for .75 cents but did not look like good quality. Wondering where the $2.25 fly comes from and if it is possible to buy more directly from them, of course at a lower price.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.
Thanks

sportsman's has good prices on their flies. keep in mind that the wire hooks on some of the small flies do bend easily or break if you hook a real big fish (like steelhead- trust me- i know).

ther's a place on the net called flydealflies (dot com). I've heard they sell decent flies for about $7.00 per doz. I haven't tried them yet, but am going to order some from them in the near future. They have a minimum of 5 or 6 doz. I think.

One of our sponsors, GI Joes, has a nice fly dept. and sells fly for about 1.25 and if you buy a dozen of the same type, they have them in a bag for about $9/dzn.

Giz, is that per doz. for any of their flies? Because most of what I've seen in their prebagged dozens (at least in Sherwood, Gresham and 82nd) have been what I consider junk patterns - like they took their overstock that no one wanted and bagged them up.

Just my observations.

I'd recommend others recommendations of GI Joes and Sportsmans Warehouse. GI Joes standard price is 1.69 a fly and periodically, they go on sale for .99, the only problem is that they only carry a limited selection and real limited sizes (rarely anything under a 16) so if you need small bugs, you'll have to go elsewhere.

I have a buddy that buys from Hill's Discount flies on the web (mod note: direct contact info for non ifish sponsors not allowed...giz..) and has had real good luck with them.

BTS - my point exactly. I wasn't implying that they were poor quality. I've had better than average success with Joe's flies. In years past, they had quite a selection of prepackaged flies. But for some reason, this year the patterns they are offering are garbage for the most part. I'd expect to be able to buy the standards - PT, GRHE, Prince Nymph, etc. - but no - not this year - at least so far.

I have been using Hills for about four years now, can't complain. They dont have all the patterns, but most.

I bumped into a booth at the fishing show that operated a dot.com fishing fly site that used foreign labor to make them at 99 cents each. I don't remember the name or site but I bought 30 flies and they looked good, fished good and didn't come unravelled any quicker than the $2.25 flies. Does anyone know who that was????

Have had good luck with Hillsdiscountflies. Decent enough for the money, nice folks and good, quick service. I think many of the flies found in stores, even in some of the nicer fly shops, are also tied in Sri Lanka and Vietnam. lnf

ORS: just got in and saw your post. I am not certain if it is all their flies or only the prebagged ones. One could ask the sporting goods guy if all are priced by the dozen or just the ones they have bagged.

Hillsdiscount flies are priced right and they have some very nice patterns. They also have fantastic customer service. Another good one that I have used for a long time is Buckabug. Good luck! RD
