On the way to  , decided to spend a minute on the net checking out Silver Creek. Heading to Wyoming with the family friday and a friend suggested we spend some time there. Geez I love ifish... I didn't even have to google Silver Creek, just check the fly board.
So Mr. BT what can you tell me? lnf

Well within the next week or two the brown drakes will come off, that is the most interesting hatch you will ever fish. Also PMD's and BWO's right now. I very seldom fish the conservancy, I usually fish below Hwy 20, around the point of rocks or way down river, almost where it dumps into the little wood river. Let me know if there is anything spacific you want to know about. Silver creek has big fish that are very smart, PHD in out smarting fishermen.

Silver Creek is gorgeous, even if the fish are smarter than I am.

There is a cheap semi-developed campground at the fish hatchery across the road from the turnoff to the Nature Conservancy site.

Last summer I fished there a couple of days. The afternoon PMD hatch one day was so thick I was afraid to open my mouth to breathe. All I was catching was little trout. Then I saw a broad back of a fish about 40' directly upstream. The big fish would casually slurp 8-10 flies, then drop back down for a few minutes. I cast expertly to this fish during several of his forays to the surface. Never got a sniff, but it was exhilerating anyhow. The thought of hooking a 4 lb.(?) fish on tiny tippet kept me focused.

I think it was about this time of year we were there. I did not see any brown drakes.

Good Luck!

TC

Wow TC, you weren't exagerating... the fish you don't catch ARE big.

Any recommendations on an area to camp for a night or two with a two and a three year old? Near the river, but maybe not on a bluff overlooking it. Any idea how long of a drive from there to Jackson Hole? Thanks. lnf

Hayspur campground, its not right on silver creek its about a mile away, there is a creek right by the campground thou, its called loving creek and there are also some big fish in there. There is a kewl little pond there at the the campground also, its called gaver lagoon. The hatchery stocks the lagoon all the time. You won't regret stopping there. I will post some pics of sullivan lake, the fish there are awesome, smart and big.

This picture does not do the fish justice, it was taken from about 50 yards away at least, those fish are around 25 inches long.

Charles,
My guess is the Drakes will start the 9th of June. There will be a mediocre hatch this year. Next year's will be off the charts. This is just my guess though  .

You ever get hit in the ear by one of those things? I had one run into me the first year I fished the Drakes, and it scared the crap out of me. They are freakin' huge! No wonder the big brownies slurp them like candy.

Silver Creek?? Is this a tributary of the Wood? How far up? This is interesting. I love to be humiliated by big "dumb" trout.

From all I know about silver creek, its a spring creek so it bubbles up from the ground and is also fed by loving creek and stalker creek.
Ya mojo last year I got lucky hit a pretty good drake hatch, man those things are huge, just after dark when they start flying around its dangerous. Its still a trip to fly fish in the dark thou. So what crystal ball do you look in to find out all your info?????

35 years of fishing that frustrating piece of gin clear nirvanna, my Man! And occasionally I guess right (about 1 out of 4 years).

Plus I have to be out of town NEXT week, so that'll be when the big brown bombers are flying!

Everything I hear says that they will be early this year, so plan acccordingly. I'd say this weekend is as good a guess as any.

I might just pop out there after work on Thurs/Fri.
(HAD to rub that one in)

Charles:
It didn't take you long to figure out the best times on Silver Creek are in the late PM after the guides are gone and the bugs are out.

Mojo:
You haven't said anything about your trip up to Lewiston. You guys do any good?

bllelk, I stunk it up bad at Lewiston! The rivers were all blown out. Some fish were caught, and a lot of beer was consumed. All in all, a good trip.

Fella's (and Ladies), I just heard the Drakes are starting already! Guess I was off by 5 days. Good luck, and wear SOSpenders when fishing at night! Be safe!
