View Full Version : Fly tying roundtable
I've seen these on other fly forums and was thinking it might be fun to do one of these.
Anyone interested?

Forgive my ignorance, but what's roundtable?

Definitely interested.
Mark - the idea, as I understand it, is to pick a fly or two and everybody interested gets together to tie. Great chance to socialize, share some tips and materials and tie some flies. Also a chance for beginning tyers to learn from the pros (guess that is why I am so excited about the idea ).
I'd be happy to host one at the end of June. lnf

They are fun. I've hosted a few so far. I've tried to center them around food and/or fishing as well. Sit and tie, then afterwards eat. Just pick a couple patterns (you can also just do a "improve a skill" type gettogether).

I too would be VERY interested in attending.
I'm somewhat a newbee to the fly fishing world, but I have about 30+ patterns under my belt for the whopping 4 months I've been doing it. =]
Okay let's do it! When and where?
Suggestions?

Would mikey fins mind us dirting their floor with feathers and what not?
Also I think it would be fun.. but if we decide on mikey fins, somone call and ask ahead first.

i just called and they don't have a problem with it. i can call them later and let them know what time, which day and how many, and they will reserve a table or two for us. what do you think guys? who is willing to come to mickey finns (i'm not trying to take over the lead Stew, i'm just trying to get people fired up about this ) and tie one on and one up? i would like to do this sooner than later. (i'm going on the deschutes float trip in late june, and would like to bring my "masterpieces" with me) i also volunteer to go pick Giz up at his house (which is alot farther from Mickey finns than my house that is 5 blocks away) if he is willing to come, so i can prove that he does exist like bigfoot... :jester:

Mickey Finn's would be an appropriate place to tie. Hmm, trying to remember how thick those tables are? I would happily host one in July and have a covered patio and an air compressor that would make clean-up a snap. :smirk:

Giz and bigfoot in the same sentence....hmmmmm....might be something to the rumor that they are one in the same.
Giz....
I'm not trying to take over the lead Stew, I'm just trying to get people fired up about this )
Not a problem at all  I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for this. I'll tie my Wilson River Red and may even give up a few Junglecock feathers to those who attend.

If I remember correctly (and I'm not saying that I do), those tables at Mickey Finn's are pretty thick...That being said, I wouldn't mind trashing LNF's place :yay:.
Weeknights are the best for me.
Are we talking trout or steelhead flys????????

i have a pattern that i am willing to show. if each person that has a specific pattern they want to tie and help others tie, then let's do it that way. for all the other people that don't have anything in particular, they can come to learn the patterns that the other's will be tying. (or something like that) how does that sound?
i will go to Mickey Finn's and check and see how thick the tables are. i will report back as soon as i know.

i want to get on this. who is in for mickey finns? the tables are about 1.5 to 2" thick. i have to make a reservation to make sure we have enough room. let's decide on a day. what works for you guys? the only nights that don't work for me are wed and thurs nights. how many of us are in?

Mickey Finns... I'll be there. At least I'll come purchase a beverage or two and watch the pros. Honestly, I haven't really tied a fly in several years (and that is a whole different story). I haven't put any real time in on a vise since I was in about third grade, and at that time, the desired outcome of a session was to make the biggest or ugliest fly.
I have a related question... I'll post it as a separate thread soon.
I'm in  I have a metal base for my vise so the thickness of the table is no problem for me.

mark- we will be there for a while. if you can drop by, you are more than welcome.
GBS- you rock and thank you. that helped me quite a bit. now i can tie flies without fear of them unraveling after a fish. that is why i alway tie 3 times as many as i need for a day   :hoboy: ! i can't wait to do it in front of a bunch of tiers so i look like i know what i'm doing (as gbs knows by one of the flies i tied, i don't know what i'm doing).

again my vote is for wed, because I would love to make this event. A rook like myself could always use the pointers from the vets.

If you guys are willing to make the 'short' trip to the Grove (I could arrange a shuttle from the bus stop ), I would be happy to host a roundtable. Got a covered patio with electricity for lights and sound, a bbq, and a big kiddie pool that should hold enough ice and beer to get us through a few hours of tying and storytelling... though we might need a contingency plan if greenbutt gets on a roll with his jokes. lnf

i would be willing to make the drive out to "the grove". can i bring the wife and little one or should we just keep this a guy thing. just wondering.

06-21-2004, 02:13 PM
Shoot yeah! I have a 2 and a 3 yr. old. We'll throw them all in the pool to keep the beer from floating above the ice. I was thinking of hosting a general Ifishflyfish gettogether so if that is the direction this takes so be it. We may not all depart with a couple dozen new flies but a good time could be had. lnf

Hey, it's Wednesday....what's the plan? "The Grove" works for me. I'll be looking at houses around 3, so I might not be able to make it until 6 or so...and I don't know if I want my wife hanging out with such a rough crowd  Although the kids might just set the hook in her

Yeah whats the plan? LNF's place would work out great for me but maybe it would be best to get something a little more centralized.

I'm in. Next week is pretty busy for me in the evenings, but I'll definitely try to be there. I'll be just an observer.
I'm chewing over two options for fishing side hobbies. I'm taking a class from Bait O Eggs tonight on rodbuilding. I'll be checking you all out about flytying.
