View Full Version : Deschutes trip, 04 (3rd weekend) 1 open seat

Riverkeeper and I want to do an overnight trip on the Deschutes.
We are going to do two Drift Boats over one night on the third weekend of June. A few of you have expressed interest in doing this with us, and I will offer two open seats in my boat. Help split gas and shuttle and we are on the river! I was thinking we would do Warm Springs to TroutCreek and camp half way down.
Anyone else up for this?

Hey ZaQ - we're going to be there the 7th-14th. Maybe we'll see ya down there.

Is the 14th the weekend you're looking at?

Sounds good to me. Isn't that a pretty short float for an overnight though? Maybe camp at Trout Creek and do the float down both days?

BTW - I kill all snakes I see, or run away from them screaming like a little girl.

I'll have two seats in my boat too, although we'll need to think strategically to get all the gear, beer, etc in without sinking it. I think we're looking at the weekend of the 19th & 20th.

I can run mine as a gear boat.

Snakes Indy, very dangerous, you climb down first. :bigshock:

It's a short trip, but camping half way lets you fish the late evening and early morning in less "stressed" spots. And you don't have to deal with the head lights and Aerosmith Boom Boxes all night at TC. Do you need a permit to cook the snakes?

Ooooh... sounds like a hoot. We'll be rolling in from the Griswald family vacation just prior; but if there happens to be an open seat last minute, and if the powers that be can all agree, I would love to join in. lnf

Than we could do it on the second weekend.

Riverkeeper
05-26-2004, 04:19 PM
Can't do the second. Nice thing about father's day is, unlike mother's day, you CAN call your dad and say "Dad, I'm going fishin with the fellas. Let's get a beer monday."

Every rattlesnake that I have ever come across(about 8)have alway's let me know they were there and then left. They are not aggressive unless you screw with them, and are an intregal part of the ecosystem.

Snakes don't kill people, fear kills snakes.

lilnorthfork

A rattlesnake can strike at a distance equal to 2/3 its body length, you almost have to step on it to get bit. Now the king cobra, that is a different story. It can strike from 29 feet away. :bigshock: Glad we don't have those around. Sorry, it is a slow news day here in the Grove.

I'm with ya Am,
I love all snakes, but that's jst me. when I find a rattler, I've been know to play with them, but very carefully. They are beautiful creatures. Once got into a fight with two guys on the crooked who found it funny smashing one with a big rock 8' back from the river's bank. :hoboy: :argue:
Hate to see that.
But, do beware of those cobras!!!

I won't be back from WallyWorld 'til sunday night. If it happens to get pushed back a week, count me in for sure. Hopefully there will be an abundance of willing cutthroat at Jellystone to report on. btw, RK, I think that cobra could strike from across the river... verrry scarrrry. lnf

My Buddy Erik and I are in with his Willy. We're working on the Father's Day angle though. May have to get a little grace and come home early on Sunday. Friday night through Sun. Morning could be cool though? If not all Saturday and part Sunday is o.k. as well.

TillamookChinook
06-01-2004, 08:58 PM
I'm in, with my 14' Valco DB. So, I have one or two seats available. I'll be driving over from Portland in the ol' Scout (new mufflers, so earplugs are now optional.)

I'd especially like to take someone who can show me how to catch the big fish I'm usually not catchin'.

I assume we meet early Saturday morning, the 19th, at the Warm Springs launch and coordinate the shuttle among the vehicles there.

carpools?????

Riverkeeper
06-02-2004, 12:25 PM
We'll definately carpool. For now, everyone who is bringing a boat should figure out what permits, toilets, etc you'll need and get on that. When the time is nearer and we actually have a short list of floaters, we'll figure out how many rigs we need. Lets try to avoid having 10 boats with 1 guy in each boat.

PittsburghD
06-07-2004, 08:06 PM
We're still checking out the Father's Day thing. We may go up Friday and fish all day Saturday. We'll either go home early Sunday or late Saturday evening depending on how the next couple of days pan out. I'll keep in touch.

Well, folks....I have been watching in envy as you plan for yer trip in a couple weeks. not posting out of sheer disappointment. I would generally be all over this, seeing as I have a boat and such. no way I can join this one. I wont' be able to hit the D for an overnight/ multi-day float til august and the first metalhead push.
I guess the jam around the campfire will have to wiat Riverkeeper. hopefully we can hook up on the porch or something in the big city.

BTS and I, being new pappas, would like to be off the water by noon on sunday. Wyatt and mom really want me around at some point on fathers day. Sounds like PittsburgD is in the same situation. Will that work for you guys?
RK, will you be bring the bushmills and the banjo? :yay:

I think it would be nice to get an early start saturday, and camp near TC. That way, we can get up and fish a little in the morning, then row on out. If some people want to stay longer, they can fish at TC or back at WS after shuttling.

Blue Tip Spinner
06-08-2004, 01:45 PM
i like that idea RK. that sounds good. do i need to get a river pass for myself or do we get that for all the people in the boat?

Riverkeeper
06-08-2004, 02:26 PM
So far as I can tell, each person needs a pass, you can buy online HERE. (http://www.boaterpass.com/MainFrame.asp) I need to figure out whether we need to bring toilets or not.

greenbuttskunk
06-09-2004, 07:40 AM
I've got mine. Keep it in the back seat fro those long haul road trips.
I've got my pass, bought an annual one.

I had a dream about a dancing vegetable that told me to check out THIS SITE (http://www.or.blm.gov/Prineville/Deschutes_River/lower_deschutes_rec_management_changes_june_fy03.p df) also.

Blue Tip Spinner

GBS- check the web site and see if an annual pass is good on the weekends after memorial day weekend. i thought i read something about that in there.

i found it. here is the link: http://www.boaterpass.com/MainFrame.asp

when are we gonna get together and plan the trip, ie. tents, stoves, lanterns...?

If anybody still has an open seat for the float, my buddy TJ would love to go. He's a recent transplant to oregon from colorado who was a fly guide. Great fly dude, and a ton of fun. Great on the sticks too! LNF can vouch for him too. Let me know if anyone has a spot to fill in the boat.
Thanks,
Brad

After some mild chatting with Liverwrecker, GreenBarleySkunked, and BTS (Big Turds Swimming) this sounds like the perfect recovery weekend from my last 'boys' weekend. I'll check with the wife and then maybe I can come play with all you fruit flies with my gear bangin' stuff.
