Since the Coastal Cutthroat event got rained out I headed east to the dry side. Sorta dry. The weather was variable, with some sun, some showers and some wind, but altogether very fishable.
I hiked in above the locked gate above Maupin, noticing some salmonflies along the river. I started out a little past noon and was into eager fish right off the bat. Ya gotta love the salmonfly: big enough hook for an old fart to thread the leader through the eye, and big enough fly to actually see it on the water.
I found a spot where I could wade out a little and cast back against the grassy bank. I landed two, lost one (probably huge!) and had a bunch of short strikes, all on the big dry salmonfly pattern. Then they went off the bite.
The rest of the day was tougher fishing, getting about a fish an hour, some modest redsides and some 9" steelhead smolts (I assume that is what would have a clipped adipose fin.)
I found a lovely spot for the evening hatch, a spot maybe 3' deep with large rock bottom, lots of places for fish to hide and rest. But the evening hatch never happened. Only an ocassional rise, not often to anything on my line. Maybe next time.
