Tip-toed out of the house about 5:30 this morning... darn nice of Mrs. lnf to give me the day on the river, least I could do was not wake the kids on my way out. Hit the Trask first and a fish rose to greet me as I approached. Wish I got a better look because it was the only bit of fishyness I was to see for the next couple hours. No matter, it was a gorgeous morning with a classic Oregon dry rain falling and not another soul to be seen. On to the upper Kilchis for the true mission of the day... cutts. River was low and clear and the rain was no longer dry. Worked a few nice looking runs but nothing. About to move on, I cast directly up into some fast water, turned downstream to look for a crossing and... bam! Woohooo, first fish caught on a self-tied fly - a Spruce. Nice 13"er. Hmmm, lets try that cast again... well hello little cousin, a wee bit smaller than the first. Nothing more there so I revisited the upstream holes and managed un more petit cutt. Then came my second fishing first. Entered the river a little too eagerly and came down hard flat on my back. Spasms said I shouldn't move too fast, water pouring into the waders said I should. Well, its barely noon and I'm not expected home 'til dinnertime so better suck it up. Tried a couple other spots, nada. Made my way over to the Wilson up near the deadline. Shoot if those little steelies didn't love the ole Spruce too. Hmmm, but what are these fin-clipped fish doing so high in the river, and lots of them? Left the Wilson and checked out Gales Creek on the way home. Been eyeing it since I moved here and hoping it would prove to be a fishy little river, seeing as it is conveniently nearby. Plenty of bugs but no sense of fish.... What a day! I generally find a piece of water and stay there 'til it is time to go home, so fishing four different rivers was new, exciting, and a little weird. Oh yeah, the third first of the day. Was daydreaming about the cutts and the spruce when I should have been paying attention to the road. Today was the first time I've ever had a maple branch rip the roof rack off my truck. :hoboy: Don't you just love all the surprises a day of fishing holds.
