I have fished diver and bait for many years and would say I am by no means an expert, but here is how we rig and fish diver & bait. I would suggest getting some Brad's Divers, they will have them at GI Joes. I would buy the black ones and get them in regular size, and the magnum size. The regular size diver will dive to 12' to 15', and the magnum will dive close to 20'. Attach the diver to your mainline on the connector in the bill of the diver. On the belly of the diver is a swivel, this is where you will attach your 4' to 6' leader. I personally tie a double hook set-up, and both hooks to be tied as a solid tie, not slider. I prefer a 1/0 hook set-up for steelhead, and a 3/0 hook set-up for nooks. I tie the hooks at a 2" spacing from the eye of one hook to the other. I also like to use a small 4mm bead above the top hook, and a spin n' glo of your choice, I prefer pearl pink for Steelhead, and anything with green for nooks. I will vary my bait from sand shrimp alone, to a combo of sand shrimp and good eggs. When you rig the sand shrimp, you will want the head of the sand shrimp to be downriver, and the first thing the fish will see. If using eggs, I will rig the sand shrimp as above, and then on the upper hook, I will put a clump of eggs in the egg loop.
Now on to the way you fish this set-up. I will start back trolling above the good holding water, and start letting out the lines, I will run out about 60'-75' of line, then click them closed and put them in the rod holder!! I mean that, put them in the rod holders, or you may be too anxious, and pull it out of a fishes mouth before they take it down fully. It is best to back-troll at a very slow pace downriver. If fishing several rods, try your best to fish them all at the same distance behind the boat. When you get a hit, leave it alone, until line is peeling of the reel, and the rod is down for good. It is tough, but very necessary. Give the fish a good hook set, and hang on.
This technique is very effective, and can also be lethal to wild fish, so be careful when a lot of wild fish are present. If you do hook a wild fish just clip off the leader and let the fish swim off. Hope This Is Helpful.
