The other night they were saying on the news that this could turn out to be our dryest spring since 1941.
With the June weather we've been getting this week the Willamette has been dropping, clearing and warming up. A couple degrees per day.
Since we are having June water conditions that calls for some June springer tactics.
The use of baits like herring or eggs will fade and prawns or hardwear will shine.

Prawns work when it gets warm out because the active trash fish will not bother them too bad.

Spinners appeal to the higher matabolism rate of the salmon.
Use painted blades when the sun is off the water and matalic blades when it's sunny. A spinner with a gold plated blade and red beads is one of my favorites.
I knew some guys that used to do quite well still using herring but instead of the green and blue label sizes they used the smallest "fire cracker" herring. They would put a good bend in them so that they'd get a real fast spin and then they would troll faster than earlier in the year.
Another tip: You are also better off fishing early in the day while the water is the coolest and before all the pleasure boaters send the fish deep and hiding.
Just a fraction of the run has gone up river and although the conditions aren't ideal there are still some spring chinook to be had.
