View Full Version : A role of the dice

Fishing can be a role of the dice, some days more so than others. Especially this time of year. As we get pounded by Pacific storms. One day the rivers will be fishing great, the next they will be puking mud.

Pat and his boss Mike were scheduled to come down from the Seattle area to fish with me on the Oregon coast but with the current forecast it didn’t look too good so I gave Pat a call to fill him in on what was up.

I told Pat it could be a role of the dice. They could hit some great fishing if the forecast was wrong but if it was right, it might be a waste of time. I told him we could reschedule if he wanted to.

I’ve gambled and won before, hitting it just right before the next storm can muddy the river but more often than not it’s a drive to the coast only to have breakfast at a local restaurant.

Pat checked with Mike to see what he wanted to do and then shortly called me back. He said, “Fishing’s always a role of the dice and since it may be hard for us to reschedule let’s do it.”

It was mid morning before we found ourselves fishing over some good looking water. Good looking color wise that is, but the leaves that had been freshly fleeced from the surrounding trees were heading full steam ahead to the ocean. If you looked over the side it was like a blizzard down there.

We were forced to constantly reel in and clean off the baits but this paid off.

The second fish we hooked came on Pat’s rod. I rowed over the nearest gravel bar to get us out of the current and the fight was on. I knew right away that this was a good size fish by the way it purposely and methodically swam up stream against the current. This fish had one thing on its agenda and no little piece of steel in its jaw was going to stop it.

It was a give and take battle that lasted as least 20 minutes. Twice it made a run to the tailout but since we wanted to leave the hole on our own terms Pat put some pressure on the beast and turned it.

Finally we had him to the boat and as I put the hoop of the net around him the silence of the river and forest were filled with loud congratulations.

Up until now Pat’s biggest fish was a 41 pound Chinook from Canada. This one tied his record!

I’m glad Pat and Mike chose to role the dice!
