Red Tide- Rubber Snubbers on the line- If you've been fishing the lower Columbia the last few weeks I'm sure you've seen the red tide/red water in places. I beleive it's caused by an algea.

I used to try and avoid fishing in it since I was afraid the fish wouldn't be in it or that they couldn't see my bait but last fall on the Nehalem Bay we ran into some of the same colored water and had no problem catching fish in it.

This year on the Columbia I've had the same results. We caught both chinook and coho in this red stained water.

Maybe it only goes down so deep or maybe the fish are addapted to find their food in the low light conditions but for sure it doesn't turn off the bite as far as I can tell.

Rubber snubbers on the line- This year a reletively knew thing is being used on the lower Columbia. It is a large version of the rubber snubber used by lake trollers.

Personaly I haven't used them much yet but I will when I start fishing out by the B10 line on a fast incoming tide. You see they are to allow for more "give" when a fish bites and the rods I use load up so well I don't think it's to an advantage to have them, except when I am going to be fishing in that ripping fast water when the fish are grabbin' the bait and getting washed back with the current.

If you are using a fairly stiff rod the rubber snubber could/should be a huge asset allowing for more streach.

I talked to Buzz about them and he told me they have 80# line, doubled inside for strength. They are 12 inches long and will streach out to 36 inches. They come in chartruse and flo red but they are going to also come out with them in black and also maybe a shorter one that doesn't streach out as much.

Something to remember about using them and that is you may have to shorten your leader length a little to take make up for the three foot (streached out) snubber. It could be a hasle to try and net a fish with a six or seven foot leader and three feet of snubber.

As I use them I'll try and keep you posted on my success with them. So far some guides I know swear by them and some haven't been using them.

It may just boil down to the fact that some days a person will loose a lot of fish and some days they'll get them
