I love fishing with people from other places, I love talk fishing and listen to their fishing stories and about how they catch different fish.

I also love to show off to them the beauty that Oregon has to offer. Lately it's been the Columbia Gorge-an experience not available anywhere else.

Besides the local clients I've had people from Texas, Virginia, Seattle, Montana, Massachusetts and Nebraska this week. And nearly every one of them has caught a fish.

Here are some tips for those of you going out:

Regular mint toothpaste is a great lure polish to remove scum, rust deposits or old scents.

In snaggy areas I've been running a large corkie half way down my leader to help keep the spinner up off the bottom.

And use heavy leader. I've been running 40#. The fish aren't leader shy at all on the Columbia. My main reason for using this heavy stuff is for easy releases. I identify if the fish is hatchery or not before netting. If it has to be released I will just grab the leader with my had, pull the fish along side and unhook with pliers. This cuts down on slime loss in this warmer water.

We've been getting quite a few wild fish that have to be released.
