Here is a How-to create a Rubber snubber for those trolling or hoglining herring. I came up with idea after watching a seminar in Fife, Washington at Sportco on Saturday, March 27th. As explained by Luhr-Jensen (Buzz Ramsey) the Rubber snubber allows the salmon to chew on the bait a little longer with less tension on the bait and it seems to result in more solid hookups with less fish lost. Sounded like something worth trying to me. So this is what I came up with:

Above is a diagram of items needed to create a Rubber snubber. First, you will need approximately 12 inches of surgical tubing. I got this from 4fishin.com (http://www.4fishin.com) and it comes in many colors - this one being fluorescent green and having a 3/16ths inside diameter. Second, you will need the shock cord which I chose to use 32 inches of 80-pound Tuffline. Third, you will need a couple short pieces of Tuffline to tighten to the surgical tubing. Finally, a couple strong large swivels (I used 2/0). I have chosen a couple pliers to tighen the knots and a herring threader to push the shock cord into the tubing.

You start off by pulling the Tuffline through the tubing.

Next, you tie off the swivels to the Tuffline.

Next, you push the Tuffline and swivels into the tubing using a herring threader to do this. Hint, I wetted the knots with a drop of dishsoap so they slid through the tubing easier.

It seems to work best to push the swivels past the end of the tubing a little more than 1/4 inch so that they can be peeled back in the final step.

Next, tie a couple nail knots behind the first loop in the swivels and tighten with the pliers.

Finally, peel back the ends of the tubing and the rubber snubber is complete. Enjoy.
