We have listed our favorite lures, but what lures do you have that are seemingly worthless and have never or seldom caught any fish? List them here so we can save our cash for the good stuff.
Crankbaiting: A Smoo.
Plastics: Auger tail worm
I always seem to fall for the new gadgets the weekend TV show experts push. Too many times they do not produce for me. When will I learn....

This is going get me hammered, but: poppers.
I can catch smallies till my arm hurts on stick bait topwater by "walking the dog", but have NEVER had any success with poppers. Got about 15 of 'em in my box, too.
And, no, you cant have 'em

Ohhh, that's a tough question to answer. Let's put it this way, I have several lures that I've never even tried because they just don't seem like they'd be better than the ones I normally use.
If I don't have any confidence in a lure, it'll sit in the tackle box until the cows come home. :smirk:

Basically, anything you carry but don't use, is the worst lure in your box. On the other hand, when you are on fish, getting bit frequently, THAT's the time to test new stuff and gain some confidence in it. So, you need to carry that new stuff along, even if you don't find the right circumstances to give it a good test. Other times, you may be going to water that's new to you, so you have to take along some extra stuff, depending on what you find when you get on the water. I tend to fish plastics too much. I've learned :smash:, finally, that when a squall is coming in, to put down the plastics and get out a crankbait, spinnerbait or buzzbait. :applause:
I'm a firm believer in the notion of spending a whole season learning each basic lure type, but would suggest learning TWO techniques a season, one a vertical presentation, the second a horizontal presentation. Something like Texas Rigged Worms and Spinnerbaits. C&R, Steve

sbasser said it best. Over the years I have cut way down on the amount of tackle I carry. But as far as the :jester: dumbest purchase of tackle I have ever made.....it would have to be the helicopter lure ( I can't believe I just admitted to buying some of those things in public ).
mtn basser, if you ever figure out how to catch smallies on those poppers, PLEASE let me in on it. I have several also. I have friends who say they catch fish on them, but they never seem to be able to make them work in my boat. And to think, I spent $25.00 a piece on a couple of them when I was in California a couple of years ago. :depressed:

Maybe or maybe not you guys have tried this but have you tried working your poppers quickly kind of like a spook with just a pause now and then. This seems to work for smallies and when fishing for the largemouth patience seems to be better with longer pauses followed by twitches.

A really long time ago, about 15 or so years, I purchased a bunch of these lures called Roadrunners. Its a little jig with a timy spinner blade near the jig head. I have seen tv shows when the pros are catching fish after fish on these things. Me, I can't catch a snag with them! But every year when I clean out the tackle box, I always save them. Don't ask me why!

Wannabe said it well . I have also found that it helps to be consistent with the timing of your retrieve . If you pause and then pop it they will get use to your rhythm . If you change your rhythm on that retrieve they will often blow up and miss your lure . :angel1:

There's times when I think it's a spinnerbait...but about then I catch some fish on them. I would rather fish a crank but spinnerbaits do have their place.

On the John Day, I haven't found one that won't work...eventually; even the Dancin' Eel. That's the only place where it did catch smallies. So many lures; so little time.
Carolina-rigged 5,6 inch tubes that are allowed to tumble in the bottom of deep holes have been producing some nice sized fish for me for the past few weeks.
