John Day Smallmouth ?

wondering if anyone has fished smallmouth in the lower John Day? I'd love to get over there if the water temp is right and the big-ins are biting.

fished it all day last Saturday and did not catch a single fish. Fished all the places I usually catch lots. It is common for the fishing to be slower early in the year, but Saturday it was dead. Water must still be too cold.

Just checked the Service creek flow rate & it's up to 7700 & rising. I'm sure this has an adverse effect on the lower river. The CR is still very cold but is rising slowly. Might get a little action in the shallows if we continue to get warm sunny days.

I was on the upper river to this last weekend and the John Day was running very cold. Back waters in some areas of the Columbia were up to 50 degrees. Had a tourney out of Boardman and it took 19 and change to win. A lot of nice fish came in. We caught main river fish and backwater fish. Not great fishing but it wasn't bad either.

Water Temperature: 54
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet


You can always go to: http://www.cqs.washington.edu/dart/adultpass.html
and see what the temp for The Dalles dam is...then after some experience you could make an adjustment for how much colder or warmer (if any) your fishing spot is from The Dalles.

Today's water temp at The Dalles is 49.6 degrees.
