East Fork Lewis

Anyone fished it lately? I am in dire need to go out fishing and it is one of the closest rivers. Any comments would be great.

I took the kids and grandparents up to Lucia Falls yesterday and saw about lots of steelies trying to jump up the falls. We saw a fish about every minute. Awesome site and one that will be remembered for a lifetime, even for the non-fisherman. We didn't fish nor did we see anyone fishing, but they are there in good numbers.

Those are late chinook. The steelies haven't made it up that far yet.

The summer steelhead are at Lucia Falls. Down at Daybreak yesterday AM we fished on mainly old chinook. It's about time for the winters!!!

I've been poking around Daybreak down and haven't seen much of anything. I've only heard of one winter being caught so far. But with the incoming rain.......

Do you guys drift or jig daybreak? I remember a few years ago, my Dad and I would drive in to a spot upriver and drift fish it. Haven't been there in a while, but dying to give it a try.

2 years ago they planted 90,000 winter steelhead on the east lewis.That means there will be a return of around 2700 based on a 3% smolt to adult survival rate. fish for harvest. Rumors that they are phasing out steelhead plants in the East lewis are false! I don't care how crowded the river gets come get these fish out of the river.. The East Fork has no hatchery the only way to keep these fish from spawning in the wild is to harvest them..

here are some numbers plants from 2002

North Fork Lewis and the Elochoman rivers, each of which got 100,000 smolts
East Fork Lewis (90,000 smolts)
Kalama, (75,000 smolts)
Washougal, (65,000 smolts)
Grays River (40,000 smolts)
Salmon Creek in Hazel Dell, Coweeman and White Salmon rivers, each of which got some 20,000 smolts.

At Daybreak I fish with FirstCast Jigs and a bobber in the tailout of the bridge hole.

Thanks Thumper, that is good to know. I am getting a jig outfit soon. Just ordered some FirstCast jigs, can't wait to try it. Never fished with bobber and jig before.

Is that downstream from Daybreak? I remember fishing something that souded like that name when I was younger but haven't fished the E Fork for many years.

graemlins/1zhelp.gif I am planing on going tomorrow, and wanted to know if any one went to day. I thought about going to Louisville Park is it too early for that spot. Or should I fish lower in the river. :shrug: Will have a jig rod and a drift /spinner rod. Any Help or Tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance ……Ross

Quick fisher the east fork will probably be clear tomorrow but it will also be very high. right now it's 2700 cfs. It fishes best at 1000 and below. fish anywhere on the river you like but follow highwater guidelines.. fish out of the main current and don't be suprised how close to shore the fish may be.
