My May totals didn't shape up to what I'm used to getting in May, and of course I got spoiled fishing out in the Columbia in April. The main thing that is important is we always had a great time on the water and everyone went home happy.
I can probably atribute the slower fishing to our second lowest rain fall year in history, the water conditions just were not the most conductive for most of the time.
I ran 15 trips and we caught a total of 25 fish, 20 were chinook and 5 were steelhead. But hey, it's still an average of a little better then a fish and a half per trip.
The catch breakdown comes out like this:
One on a standard Wiggle Wart
Two on prawns
Four on streight sand shrimp
And the rest were on either eggs or eggs/shrimp.
As I usually do I never found much of a difference between eggs or eggs/shrimp, my catch was about 50/50 for the two. A lot of the time I run just streight eggs but the times I add sand shrimp are 1)The current is strong and I have the shrimp on top of the eggs to keep the current from washing them out as fast. 2) There is a lot of color in the water and I want to get a bit more scent in the water. and 3) If there are a lot of chubs/smolts etc. around and they are picking off the eggs but not getting at the shrimp I'll fish shrimp/eggs just so that if they get the eggs there will at least be some shrimp still on the hook.
Most of the fish we caught on bait it were with a diver, and either had a Spin-Glo or a Birdie in front of the bait.
The top colors for Spin-Glo's were red head/chrome/white wings, lemon/lime/white wings, matalic green/white wings, green head/chrome/mylar wings, chartruse head/chrome/mylar wings.
The Birdies we used were either flo. red or green/white.
I always run 25# leader, even in the clear water, no problem.
Perhaps June will turn out good for springer action. Many years it is my best month for springers. They are expecting 4,000 to the hatchery and they've only gotten about 400 so far. If we could just get a bit more rain.
