May 13th 1989 for me and when I tell people that they kinda are impressed.

Is it impressive??? I don't think so... Whats impressive is all the good things that have resulted because of my direct attack on my addiction...

Good things like a wonderful marriage, 2 college degrees, a great job, kids that can be proud of their father, friendships built on trust and respect not lies and deceit.

Life needed to change for me in 1989 and it did and it continues to change on a daily basis. Life is good and will continue to be good one day at a time

I know some of those cool sayings.

One fish at a time
H.A.L.T= Hurry and lets troll
7 days without fishing makes one weak.
First time was 11-17-84 made it 10 years and got cured. Then got to do it all over again 09-18-98.

KK, I liked that. 10 years and was cured and then got to do it all over again. Hey the main thing you are doing what you got to do for you. Just remember, you are never alone.

1/25/81 is when I guit for the second time. I was cured the first time in only a year.

Dec 10, 1989 for me. I know exactly why I drank! That's what keeps me from starting again. Now I like my water a little less clear than I used to like my Vodka! Steelhead green for me!

I'm a retread too. 14 months clean, had all the answers, it only took 2 weeks back out to kick my ass right back in! 14 yrs. and 7 months so far on this gig, so far so good. My old man got "cured" 13 times at Schick Shadel before he sobered up for good.

Just a side note: If you're a "normie" or someone who drinks checking out this thread, it's important to understand something; we're not witch burners out to ban booze. We're not against drinking in and of itself. We're just against the results of OUR drinking, and real grateful we found a way out. Thank God!!! I've got friends and family who can drink and still be a good spouse, good employee or employer, treat people decently etc... if I could I would, but I proved (not intentionally) for a long time that I'm not capable of managing myself once I start. I can still party like a ****, I just don't have a bottle of vodka or a basepipe hangin' from my face while I jam.

A couple of weeks ago this was posted:

Been clean and sober one day at a time for almost 7 years now and would love to integrate my two loves... being sober and fishing...
Looking for a sober fishing partner ? (I have a terrific boat) or if the booze has stopped working for you and you want to talk... get in touch.

Since then we have gotten a group of about 18 people who share two things in common. One being in recovery and the other is fishing.

Just to clarify, this is not a motion to take anyone or anything away from IFISH. It is just something that appealed to those folks including myself who deal with the daily stuff of addiction.

The combination of recovery incorporated into such an awesome sport is a wonderful thing.

The purpose of the e-mail list is to give people who are in recovery or interested to have more connections to other support people and another group. It is also a place to plan get togethers to have a meeting, go fishing together, or just make new friends. This is not a closed hush hush thing. It is simply a support group and FISHING!

if you are interested in this send me an e-mail and I will add you to the list.

Sobriety and fish are an awesome thing

I quit drinking 23 years ago this January. At this stage in life I don't really know why I ever drank. All I know is I certainly get a lot more fishing done and without taking any beer it sure leaves a lot more room in the boat so I can buy more wiggle warts. Which has turned into quite an addiction also.

Hey Corkie Monster, You find out who your real friends are don't you. I lost all but one of my friends when I quit. Now I have three times as many friends than before and I can actually call them true friends. It's a great life.

Fish, Hunt, and play golf, if you don't have time for work then to hell with it.

Fisher-Price... that's a good date. Feb 15, 1992 for me (sober) and Apr 1 1993 (clean). I don't know how that worked out but it did. I don't usually get up on the soapbox and talk about it, but since you guys brought it up...

Pathetic Novice... You sound like a musician? Guitar player myself. Hard to find a whole bunch of "non-practicing" amongst the music scene.

I know this has been said, but I also know exactly why I "participated" and why I stopped. Thanks guys for this thread.

Lure Dragger, That's a good date.

One Fish at a Time.
Trolling is the easier, softer way.
Fish it til you make it.
I've fished here a few 24 hours.
Let go and lets fish.
Keep casting back.
It's easy to talk the talk, but you have to set the hook.
My worst day fishing was better than my best day drunk.
Some people drink normally, and I normally fish.
Put the plug in the water.
Stick with the fishermen
Just fish today

Pathetic novice, you said it!
We are not against drinking, just what it did to us. Why, if I weren't an alcoholic, I'd be drunk right now! teehee!

Just occurred to me a couple of things I've noticed in my 15 years of sobriety...It's much easier to get in AND ESPECIALLY OUT of a boat now. Also, my waders last longer because I don't fall into the blackberry bushes near as much. Ha Ha

Oh man I have to tell you all a story couple of weeks ago we went up to Cr for the last sutrgeon run. Didn't anything but shakers but had a pretty good time. Anyway it got pretty windy so we called it a day. We get back to the dock and it was pretty tough with all the wind and current. Anyway this boat pulls in almost hits mine and slides by. there is this old guy up fron with the bow line. Well they miss my boat and slam inot the dock and this just shoots right out of the front of this boat right onto his face on the dock. I mean right on his face at about five miles an hour. Busted his head wide open. His friend say something don't move buddy I'll be right there and falls out of the back of the boat into the river. It went pretty much down hill from there. It took the three of us and two other guys to get these yayhoos back on there feet. These guys wer so drunk that we busted our butt to get loaded and get out of there before they staqted driving and backing up a trailer. I just kind of stood there. I suddenly remembered why I quit doing what I was doing.

I think I'm already on the list but just in case I'm not, please add me. My e-mail is in my profile.

My SOB date is 4-07-02. I didn't have to loose all of my material possesions, but boy did I lose myself to King Alcohol and his four horsemen. I never realized how empty I was inside until I was sober for awhile, and then it hit me like a ton of bricks that I'd been using alcohol to fill up the void in my heart. And now I look to the Steelhead Gods to nourish and fill my soul.
And yes, my waders last longer now too without the blackberry thorns.

Thanks for the wonderful thread. I'll be in Phoenix for the next couple weeks, but when I get back I'll be on the hunt for STEEL!!!! I'd love to get together with a sober group.
