Since I haven't used tons of herring in the past what do you experts prefer when rigging your bait...My method was a dismal failure in Tilly Bay this Fall so help is needed.

Blue label fished near the bottom seams to work well for me.

Keep 'em in the holder and let that rod burry into the water....

Being on the water a lot and know when and were to fish different roles is a big key.

Ron,

Buy a herring cutter at the tackle shop. Makes for a real easy cut.

I like to run a three hook rig but a standard two hook mooching rig will work just fine.

Your herring, after its cut will have a short side and a long side. Gut the herring ( guts can be left in if perferred) and cut a small slit from the anus toward the front of the herring. 1/4 inch or so. This allows the water to flow through the body of the herring while your trolling. I then run two hooks through the short side. I place them as far in the body cavity as possible and have them exit right on the ventricle line Kind of the middle. These hooks run free on the out side of the herring with the bottom hook at or just below the tail. I then run my third / upper hook through the top of the herring just to the side of the back bone that is on the long side of the cut plug.

This typically gives me a nice tight roll that gives off a lot of flash.

Experiment with your hook placements and with time you will be able to perform tight rolls and slow rolls and rolls in between.

I hope my explanation helps. Maybe some one has some pictures that will explain it better.

Book a trip with a guide who will show you what the different rolls should look like.

I fish with some herring jedi masters. They can pretty much call which one will get bit. Really amazing to watch.

Asking here is tough at best. I am beginning to be able to spot some of the losers. But I cannot make them winners every time. Quite the art really.

A picture is worth a thousand words. And you need a movie.

I agree with Flatfish- hope he had his flame-proof suit on. Out on lake pacific, you can fish anything, cut-plug, whole, just the head, bad cut plug, good cut plug- you'll catch fish. In the bay- it seems to matter more. But flatfish is right, a picture might help you but it really is a trial by fire unless you have someone to show you.

What Flatfish and TOC said is true. That's the reason I'll use whole herring instead, it's much easier to adjust the roll. Inject your sent of choice and fish. Maybe if the water was stained then you'd want the extra scent trail of plug cut and the roll wouldn't matter so much.
