I doubt that anyone on ifish is guilty of doing this but I need to vent anyway.
Mark Anderson and I, and I know many others here on ifish, have spent alot of time this season on the river picking up garbage left over from fishermen and other river users and it just seems to get worse. Beer cans, discarded mono and braided, old hooks, cigarette butts, styrofoam sandshrimp containers and on and on.
How hard is it too pack your garbage out!?! I know Jennie has seen the same thing over on the Kilchis on her property and others have expressed the same frustration on other rivers.
It's exasperating to have to deal with this constantly.
The trash I mentioned above is just the more mundane stuff. I seen used disposable diapers, condoms, hypodermic needles and human waste on some of our rivers  This is not only disgusting but a health hazard as well.
Please!!!! Take your garbage out with you. If you are drifting down the river please do not use someones land as your personal toilet!!!!
Okay off my soapbox now

Stew,
I know right where you're coming from. I fish rivers which probably have less pressure than the rivers you fish, but I still manage to fill my backpocket with hooks, line, cigarette butts, and various other things. I always have extra trash bags with me, too. What really gets me is the 5-10 beer cans thrown in the bush...I would not like to meet that guy on the one lane logging road.
The only thing we can do is continue to clean it up ourselves, and educate others. I have picked up lots of trash in front of other anglers, and I think it sets a good example.

Stew, no need to get off the soapbox! It's no wonder we see "No Trespassing" signs all over when maggots are trashing somenoe's property. My daughter goes fishing with me alot, and we always throw an empty hefty bag in the tackle box; doesn't matter where we go, that bag always comes out full. Pretty depressing. Did get to light up one pig for throwing his trash out by the Klaskanine once. He saw me and did it anyway! He picked it all up after I yelled at him; glad he did, he probably could have stomped me if he wanted to... anyway, I don't know what to do about it except keep cleaning up and riding the slobs into submission.

The people I fish with have always hauled out trash from others. It seems to be getting worse every year. Its not only on the rivers, take a good look at many of our parks. I've come to realize people are pigs. Grant McComie has had the dumping in the forest series on the last few days. There is no excuse for what's happening.
It showed teens shooting up a car and dumping it in a creek. What are their parents teaching them????

Being a native Oregonian and growing up in the Tom McCall years, I too am appalled at how thoughtless people are when it comes to the tossing of garbage. Not just on our beautiful steams but everywhere. My kids will tell you that i dont care who put it there....PICK IT UP AND PUT IT WHERE IT BELONGS!!! My waders and fishing jackets and rain gear almost always have river garbage in the pockets. I have no problem picking up junk on the bank (I'll pass on the human waste and condoms).

I have obtained many usable corkies and hooks picking up after other anglers, however, leaving your garbage behind is not excusable. If I see someone littering, I usually will say something about it.

I totally agree with ya, I always have an extra bag to pic up all the crap people leave behind. I knotice trash cans in some area's but I think the trash cans do more bad than good. I've seen many trash cans that critters have gotten into.

i hiked into a lake a few years back in the middle of nowhere, sat down on a rock to enjoy the view. upon closer inspection, it became apparent that the whole area was littered with cigarette butts. some new, many from who knows how long ago. smokers should have to eat every butt they have ever thrown anywhere other than an ash tray. what a disgusting lack of regard for our outdoors and others.

I wonder if there is a relationship between the increase of the amounts of garbage on river banks and the fact that 52% of the populations of Oregon now are non-natives???

Amen Stew!!

Here's one for you to ponder...

One time...WAY back when, before I really new where to fish, a friend and I were fishing on the Kalama. We found ourselves on a very nice peice of water in the Canyon..all to ourselves. We began fishing...an hour or so later (with no fish) we decided to head out. As we approached the top of the hill, out of the bushes jumps the State Patrol guy asking to see our licenses. We begin to ask..."What the heck were WE doing".

He said we were fishing above the deadline!! (Now, how are we to expect to know that..newbies and all.)

Long Story short...

He did NOT give us the ticket after he had seen us HAUL OUT a bag full of someone elses trash!!

Next time think about it... it might just save you from getting a citation!

There's only one thing you can do.........pack out garbage that other pigs leave behind. It's a hassle, but if you don't, the access gets lost.

I've lost more access to rivers I've fished since I was a kid in the last 5 years than in the 25 years previous. It's garbage related. Can you blame a property owner whose land is covered in garbage?

If you want to teach a lesson........wait for some slob to drop some garbage on the graound. Then go pick it up, right there. You shouldn't have to say anything.

It's an epidemic, Stew. Say it again........

This is a personal pet peeve of mine too. I am always amazed at how much crap i find. I always thought that sportsmen respected their surroundings, but boy, have i been proven wrong. I don't get it. Who do they think does pick this stuff up, the maid? I can't imagine the filth they live in every day.

Hey stew I fished the skagit the other day (up here in washington) and the banks looked pretty clean, almost like they were washed down.....Just joking after the floods theres is hardly anything left. the bad news is I live on the back side of whidbey island within a few miles where the skagit emptys to the sound....so all the trash is now on my beach. I did see a real nice 2 person kayak on the beach but is spine is broke and the nose is missing.........DJ

I agree with you Stew, it would be great if everybody packed their garbage out. Even out hunting people throw garbage! Wonder
why all the lands are being posted

Sadly these slobs will never change. They are the same type people who go to the beach for a picnic and leave their garbage for someone else to pick up. It happens from the boats also. I have seen styrofoam herring containers floating down the rivers, plastic water bottles, lunch sacks, you name it and the slobs will dump it. I also come home with pockets full of trash that i have picekd up. I will just continue to clean up after them cause they will be sure to leave some for me to pick up.

While I'm continually amazed and disgusted at what slobs many fisherman are - and unfortunately I think it's way more than the 5% mentioned earlier - there's at least one bright spot.

From what I saw, the year the Sandy's Cedar Creek area appeared to be much less of a pig sty than in the two prior years. Maybe its due to the attention its recieved here on IFish, I don't know, but it seemed a lot cleaner. Too bad though that the restrooms at the hatchery were vandalized and had to be closed.

I'd love to see these slobs cited and sentanced to at least 100 hours of community service doing litter clean-up of public rivers, beaches and trails.

Maybe I am being an optimist, but in my experience it has been about 5% everywhere I'm at.
Puting the 5%ers to work picking up litter is a great idea, especially on a stormy day.

 Second offence littering should be a capitol crime

We were about 2 miles into a roadless area last week and found beer and pop cans in the woods. I smashed them and packed 'em out in my day pack.

It's everywhere! I walk my dog for 3-1/2 miles almost daily on several different routes, and the trash is everywhere. One trail has several garbage cans and park benches right next to each other spaced along the trail. You guessed it, garbage left right on the park bench when a trash can is literally within arms reach!

It's ironic, since I obey the scoop laws, my dog is cleaner than the humans that litter the trails!
