I went to 50 lb yellow Tuffline XL a while back,
I figured I could get more on my spool than 30 lb
ultra green and it would be more visible and stronger to boot. Well I was right about the more on the spool and the visiblity, but twice now under minimal pressure it has broke. I checked the guides on my new north river rod and they looked good. Now i'm a little gun shy to continue to use it. I'm lucky to get one opportunity to land a fish per trip and a broken line with fish on would probably make me a littl cranky. What do ya'll think???

Did it break at the knot, or somewhere in the line? If it's somewhere in the line, you've got something fraying the line. If it's at the knot, well, you may have knot issues. I use 50lb Tuff, and have had no problems. Have had to break a seal or two off, which required wrapping the line around the cleat and powering away.

Roger,
Not good but I suspect that something else is going on somewhere  . I converted to 50# Power Pro and have been successful in regards to trolling in the bay with it.
I am using 80# power Pro on the Bobber Rods.
I am a believer in the braided line hype. I have even loaded up 20# tough line on my Metal Head reels because it is the diameter of 6#. Can't wait to see how that works out.
Hang in there with it bud and make sure you are using a good knot like a "palomer" or an "Improved Clinch." Some time ago I learned at a Fishermans Marine Seminar that there is a special knot for tough line called a "reverse clinch", I will show you that one next Thursday at the meeting so bring your rod.

Hey Roger
That stuff is no good, I can be over in a few minutes to pick it up to make a ball out of it for the cat.
I bet a ceramic guides might be chipped.

Mr. Hilton, your seal card should be full by now. Lets get together this spring and do a little salmon/seal fishin.
You bring up a good point, Both times the line broke, all my gear was gone. Both time I had tied to a snap swivel with a palomar knot, once with a slider and once without. Mabey I'm not doing the knot correctly.

I had issues with my tuff line at first too. At first, I thought the line was breaking...because when I reeled it in....it looked like it was broken...after further examination I realized that the knot was coming undone. I was using the wrong knot graemlins/dork.gif I talked with a friend and he suggested using the polymer knot. Since I've done that, ZERO problems with the knot coming undone.

I haven't had problems with the line breaking-to the contrary- I have broken 2 rods with the 50 lb Tuff XP. graemlins/dork.gif

I had the same problem. Went to 80# no more problem. Since there is no stretch if you are setting really hard the stuff just won't hold up and will break pretty easy.

Knots are key with superbraids. One tip I read was to double up a standard palomar. That is, thread the loop twice through the eye of what you are tying to. After that, I tie the tag in a slider knot above the palomar. If there is any slippage in the palomar, the slider will come down onto it and cinch up the whole thing. Last, I burn off what's left of the tag end. A lighter will go through superbraid faster than any knife or scissors and it leaves that little blob at the end.
When my knot is done, I have triple protection against slippage.

Mabey I'm not doing the knot correctly. <font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">According to the factory, this stuff is always going to break at the knot if the line is not flawed. The best case knot strength, according to the guy I talked to, is about 70%, or about 35 lbs. That's just a feature of the line. But you're saying minimal pressure, so that sounds to me like the knot isn't working right, or you've got a guide abrading the line. IF you had a bad guide, the line would break in random places, and if it was braking under "minimal" pressure, it would likely be visibly frayed. Have you inspected it?
I have yet to get to where I get a perfect knot every time on this stuff. I always try to tie up at home in the good light, and then give a good test with leather gloves. If it's gonna break, I want to know about it.
I'd fool around with the knots in the garage a bit, if I were you.
Now as to the seal, I want everyone to know that I fished catch and release on sealions all spring. Never netted a one, despite two or three good opportunities.

I've used the uni or Trilene knot with no problems. What I have seen is chafing near the spreader. It's not hard to spot, frays up real good at the bad spot.
