If you were to go to Mexico, away from the big resort area's for a relaxing week of panga, and surf Fishing. Where would you choose to do this, East Cape, La Paz, Loreto, etc. I need to get away for awhile. graemlins/1zhelp.gif

I've been to Rancho Leoneros in East Cape and it was awesome. You can choose Pangas or the big Cruisers. Great variety of fishing and hospitality. I haven't been anywhere else in baja though. twmeisner@comcast.net

LaPaz is nice but the fishing is generally nearly an hour away over the hill and down to Bahai de Muerto.

If you want the panga or super panga at your doorstep - and really get away from it all - then visit the East Cape. We go a few kliks north of Rancho Leoneros and stay at El Cardinel, which I refer to as five-rooms-on-a-dune. Small, very low key, family run operation.

In Loretto there are two hotels, the La Pinta and the Whales Inn that are nice. They pick you up in Pangas on the beach in front of the La Pinta. Call Pam at the Baja Big Fish Company. Her guides all speak english and have good knowledge of the local waters with both fly and gear. If you fly fish I would check with the Fly Fishing Shop in Welches, they have a wide selection of salt water flies and have been on many trips to those waters.

I was in East Cape last month (usually go to Cabo, but didn't want the crowds). We stayed at Buena Vista Beach Resort. After three days on the water and fishing the coast, I'd go back to Punta Colorado or Rancho Leonero. They are the furthest to the SW (and closest to where the fish were). It seemed they had the best and most steady supply of bait, and we fished the rocks immediately in front of Punta Colorado and had great action on Sierras and Pargo throwing small Krocodiles and/or dead bait. Passing both hotels on the way in each day, Leonero's captains were the most consistent and successful based on flags flying (on the average anyway). Good luck.

I was also at East Cape last month, staying at Los Barriles. My favorite place to stay there is Playa Del Sol, and they have a great offshore fleet. If I were going primarily for the inshore fishing though, I would stay at Punta Colorada. We fished from pangas right around Punta one day and caught a ton of pargo and one roosterfish estimated at 45-50 pounds.

There's not going to be much to do at Punta Colorada other than fish, which is okay with me. Los Barilles does offer a few more things to do, but is still way laid back. E-mail me if you want more info.

Been to Loreto, East Cape and La Paz numerous times. If your only in the mood for billfish (i.e. marlin, sailfish) Loreto and East Cape both good choices. However, for an awsome variety of truly spectacular fish (yellowfin, yellowtail, dog snapper, cabrilla, dorado, roosterfish, etc.) I feel that La Paz cant be beat. The post above was correct in that it takes about an hour to get to the launch (if in downtown La Paz), but its well worth it. A guy buy the name of Dave Jones runs (or at least used to as of a couple years ago) a first-rate service there in La Paz called Fishermans Fleet. The guides are incredible and the service has always been tops. If you look into it and you decide to go to La Paz with Fishermans Fleet, ask Dave if he has room for you to stay in his house (usually holds about 8 guests). The staff there (nice senoritas) will clean and fold your clothes while your fishing and make incredible dinners each night. I'm Jealous!!

for easy to get to and productive, i choose cabo del san jose. get hooked up with gordo banks pangas and head north to the cape or east to the banks. bring some light tackle, then you get tired of catching dorado, you can chunk fish for big skipjack. depends on what time of the year your going, but the south part of the east cape has a great variey of gamefish. we went last february and hammered the dorado. i caught 5 big ones on the first day, and it just got better. http://www.ifish.net/uploads/492316316.jpg http://www.ifish.net/uploads/412116316.jpg

that's me on the left. not the best to look at, but the fish seem to like me.
