Any current or former fish and wildlife majors out there have a pronouciation guide for the scientific name of the chinook: Oncorhynchus tshawytscha?

Thanks!

I don't know how to pronounce it, but I do know that it comes from the Latin words: oncor, meaning "one more cast"; and hynchus, meaning "what time was I supposed to be home?" The second part is derived from the Latin words tshaw, meaning "fire up the BBQ", and ytscha, which means "gotta call in sick tomorrow too".

As a fisheries graduate, I can tell you that I was instructed to pronounce it however I would be able to remember and spell it for the exam! I don't even remember the true correct way to say it.

I just went downstairs and asked a bunch of our fish biologists. They couldn't give me a straight answer. I think this is one of those where you get to make it up however you want.

I bet the indian word that tshawytscha comes from has sounds that we don't use in english.

All the spp names for pacific salmon are russian not latin so the pronounciation of usually butchered. So "shaa" "we" "shaa", both "t"s are silent.

I read an article in the paper the other day about the Chinook indians. The article stated that Chinook is often mispronounced as a sh like should like shin-ook. It should be pronounced as a ch sound like chin-ook.

It's been a while since college, but I recall the prof saying that tshawytscha is Russian in origin, not Native American. But my memory isn't the greatest so...

Here is my attempt at "writing" pronounciation:

on-core-ink-us scha-wee-scha

(and, yes, "chinook" should be pronounced as spelled - no "sh")

Kamloops,
You beat me to it graemlins/applause.gif

King Salmon is what I've always called 'em and it's hard to call them Chinook. Harder to spell Chinook too

Well if the words are truely Russian, and since I grew up speaking Russglish, then the "ts" is a sound not made in English. However, the "t" is not truely silent.

King, hog, pig, various expletives depending on it's size have always worked for me though.

Keep up the good work with our future.
