Plain and simple, before you go out be prepaired.
Yesterday as I was launching my boat at Clackamette Park a boat came in from out of the Willamette, one of the guys jumped out on the ramp and took off up to the parking lot. I had a hunch as to what had happened and I was right. Here he comes backing down the trailer and they put the boat up on it, pull it out of the water and sit there as they wait for all the water to drain out. No big deal, we have all done that one time or another.
But then a couple hours later as we are fishing I was looking at one of the hog lines and I see someone set the hook into a fish. It was the same boat. The guy without the fish goes to the front to let loose of the anchor but all he does is fight with a big bird nest of rope and soon the fish is up to the boat before they can drift back. So he grabs the net.
After fighting to extend the handle he is ready to net the fish, or not. From were we are it looks like the bag of the net is about the size of a nylon stocking! It's a brand new net and the mesh isn't streached out yet.
He scoops once and the fish falls out, swims around and he scoops again. This time you see the lure go flying into the air and the fish flops back out of the net again and is gone! All up and down the river you can here people in the other boats groan or laugh.
All this could have been avoided if some planning and preperation would have taken place first.
Always put the plug in the same place. Have your net ready. Have your anchor ready for release. Have good line on your reels. Have rods and reels in good condition and use ones that will do the job. Have a big enough net.
If you have a lot of things to bring along (bait, rain gear, your lunch, your license, sun glasses etc.) make a list and check it off.
It will make your day a lot better beleive me, I've been there before too.
