Do you have to be the first one on the water?
Yes and no. Yes, i will make sure I am the first one or close to the first one on the water if there is a spacific spot the fish are really stacked up in and is is crucial to be in the "right" spot.
No if the fish are scatered and you have to cover a lot of water and work for them. Sure, being the first one to plug through a spot will pay off, but I find that from this time of year on covering water and working it hard puts me and my clients into more fish.
Also, for winter steelhead some of the best time is after 9 when the water gets a chance to warm up a bit. This past week I put in at 10 twice and still caught fish, and on the days I started early the fish we caught were from 9 to 4 p.m.
If there is little presure I even prefure to start a little later in the morning.
