57 pounds, Salmon River, 1986. On a number three red and white Mepps. Hooked in roof of mouth, that hook broke off during fight, second hook hung in corner of mouth. 17 pound Prime line. Gloomis rod, Ambassadeur 5000. 7:31 in the morning. Foggy. 35 minutes to land it. I was wearing a red and white buffalo plaid wool shirt and my right sock had a hole in it. Other than that, I don't remember much. :grin:

75 lbs chrome nasty buck on the lower kenia. Caught him on a plug I found at the Eagle rock put in. Lure had major fish teeth marks on it and some poor sucker lost it evidently. Two more fish over 50 lbs on it before i lost it.

Since early 1980's, I've had the good fortune to spend my days off from guiding, fishing the Kenai River. I've personally landed 5 Kings over 70lbs ranging from 71 to 78lbs. Largest male King landed by one of our guests = 86lbs. Largest hen weighed 89lbs hooked by a young kid (camp helper) standing on shore.

My largest was a 70 pounder from the Kenai and it's mounted on my wall.

My boat has landed 5 in the 80lb. class with the biggest being 86lb.12oz. certified. Man, guiding the Kenai was great in the early 80's.

In 1984 I was at the freezer shop, Echo Lake Lockers, and the owner, Bob the Butcher, told me to go out and look what he had frozen.

It was Les Andersons world record King taken that year. It took 2 of us to get it up but I did hold the world record in my arms for a second or two.

Les Anderson is gone now but the memory of that fish and Les lives on.
