Got it from my mom a few months ago. Contained tackle and a reel. Any of this stuff unique or is it pretty much just common old standard fair?
Don't plan on getting rid of any. Thinking about polising up the spoons that aren't too beat up to maybe framin' them or the like. From what I recall my mom sayin' - he did mostly lake fishing in the upper penninsula of Michigan.
Any input appreciated.

The pic is kinda dark as I didn't use a flash(didn't want bright reflections off the spoons).

The reel is a Criterion Level Winding Shakespeare - model 1960. From what I found on the web - it's pretty standard fare? Pretty neat lookin.

I'm no expert. In fact, I'm no amateur about old tackle either.
But I do have an odd assortment of old lures and such that I've accumulated and inherited from my late "grampa", and other sources. I thought there was some collector value in what I had, but I don't think it's worth too much.
My opinion is to keep what you like, try it when the mood strikes you, and be happy with the memory. It is worth way more than the fish you may catch.
The intrigue of fishing with old tackle is worth more to me than using the Hot Bait of the day in the boat next to me. But that's just me...
Catch some fish on those old lures dude!

Whoa!!!
Looks like a GOLD MINE of memories there. If they could only talk! I really like the Red and white 3 spooned Devil. Looks like some good wall mounts there and a pic of Grandpa to go with.

That reminds me, I have my grandpas old boat tackle box in the garage. Every time I open it up lots of great memories come flowing out of it. graemlins/hearton.gif Thanks for the reminder.

A cool thing to do would be to put these in a deep picture frame with glass. Maybe a frame shop could give you some ideas. Or maybe find a coffee table with a drawer and pull the top off and put in a piece of glass and arrange the lures over some natural river rocks.
I also inherited my grandpa's tackle boxes and want to do the lures justice and not snag them on rocks at our local river. I get upset enough when it happens to my new tackle.

Thats great stuff when you have old memories like that, especially handed down by grampas!
I inherited my wife's grampa old fishing tackle box and he had neat stuff in there too.

I bought a similar tackle box full of about the same stuff. Got it at an estate sale up the street and I was excited to see all the old lures, hooks, and such. I took it home and began to go through it.
I quickly realized the box was exactly the way the ol' man had left it the last time he went fishing. It struck me how personal this tackle box was. It was his collection, his thoughts, his hopes, his memories right there. Made me look at it as more than just some gear but a man's fishing history.
I cleaned it up a little and put it up on the shelf. Now when I see gear for sale I take a minute to realize it is more than fishing gear.

I did the same, display them. They are worth their weight in gold that way. So much nostalga.
I have all my gramps old fishing stuff, including
fishing licenses from the 40's and 50's, old boy scout stuff of his. Even some really old jars of salmon eggs. No way I'll ever open those!
enjoy the memories, and just imagine all the fun he had catching those fish back then.

That is the biggest I-Fish picture I have ever seen.
It does help with the detail of what you found.

I was re-looking at all the good stuff and noticed that I also inherited that same steel tackle box from my Great Uncle.

I did increase the .jpg compression though to get it to half the file size of the original.
Glad people are enjoying it. I'm gonna try to find a display frame/box for some of them.
Thanks again for the ideas.

Go to any craft store and ask for a shadow box. Find the right size and then use felt or other backing, secure your lures on with thread add a few pictures and it will look great.

I've never seem most of that stuff, since my grampa didn't fish much, and my dad always fishes for trout, but I think it's cool to look at old tackle and imagine the trips some of those lures went on............Beautiful stuff!!

StinkyH, thanks for letting us in. I wish I had such a treasure. I would not do a thing to the gear. I mean to the lures, lines, reels, box any of it. You know who strung all that, who was the last to touch it before you, I'm sure you do. Incase it, arrange it, lighting it all sound great and boy could you make a case for using it but ... just looking at it the way he left it sounds the best to me. I forgot, sorry I'm not sure you asked me. Good luck and have fun with your delema.

Very cool!!!
I've got some of my grandpa, and great grandpa's old wooden plugs displayed in a shadow box too. It's a great way to display them in a den or office. I also have some that I found in a tackle box in the crawl space of a former house I rented. I checked some out on e-bay and was surprised to find out one of them was worth about $300+!! Don't fish them and don't clean them up too much. Just keep them and pass them on to the next generation when it's time.

StinkyH,
I also got a box full of "stuff" from grandpa, I put some of it in a shadow box and gave it to my father to be passed down the generation of fishermen. The rest I cleaned up and put back in the box with labels on who it came from. The tackle box sits on a shelf under the shadow box in my father den. Dad has also added to the box from his older brothers that have passed. Hopefully, I will get it when it is his time to go.
I would never consider fishing it, too many memories of fishing it with grandpa.

I am no expert on old tackle, but you might want to chech around on the internet to find out if the value of some of these items.
You might negatively impact the monetary value by cleaning them up.
(seen to many episodes of antiques roadshow I guess.)

Definitely going to put the wooden lures in a shadow box along with a few of the spoons.
My grandpa that owned these passed away before I was born - wish the lures could tell the stories for him... kinda think they do.

P.S. - I dug up this site that had one of my lures on it - http://www.tacklecollecting.com/ (http://www.tacklecollecting.com/index.html) - cool site about old lures. The one lure I referenced is a Paw Paw Pikie - the solid wooden one with the stripes.

Got to love that natural patina that old lures have. I would not clean any of it. Have you seen how much they want for rusty lures placed on an action fish picture lately? WOW!!!!! I can think of some great ways to use stuff like that to decorate.
Great Treasure!

My Mom came up with a great way to display my Dad's old lures! She got a great gnarly piece of drift wood and using really thing fishing line tied the lures to it so they look like they were snagged and broke the line.
It hangs on the wall on thier house and looks really good. It is a 'natural' look for displaying them and keeping them from sitting in a box forgotten.
I am going to do the same when I have enough lures.

Thats a treasur for sure....I had a old plug that I found on my grandfathers garage window sill, and carried it in my box for years not to use just to have it with me....my box was stolen and I regret ever putting it in the box. Let me suggest finding and old bamboo rod handle and instead of a frame, make it more of a shadow box, the driftwood still works its just inside glass so it wont have to be dusted and small fingers are protected from hooks. add a few pics of old gramps and you have a lifetime of memories for your kids to keep after you hang up your rods...DJ
