Well I'm up to my elbows in sprinkler system installation and grass seed at the moment, but Mom and Dad came up for a visit so even though the Salmon run here is just about over in the back yard I took Dad out for the day on Saturday. I explained that it is well past the prime and we would be lucky to get a fish or two. Don't you just hate it when you are wrong in front of your Dad?
The day started slow for Dad as my neighbor Greg caught the first fish - a keeper Coho of about 7 pounds - a good start. About an hour later my rod went down and I could tell that it was a Chinook and I tried to give my rod to Dad so that he could reel it in, but he said to go ahead and land it as he would wait for a fish on his rod - so I landed a 15 pound Chinook and we were 2 for 2. I had put the old reliable lure on Dad's rod, but it wasn't happening so I tuned up a brand new lure with a lot of customization courtesy of prism tape and put it on Dad's rod. About an hour goes by and he gets a tap, tap so I go to check it out and tap, tap, tap again so I set the hook and feel a fish, but it's not very big. Dad takes his rod this time and reels in a 4 pound Coho that he is very happy with and we are up to 3. After another hour I have Dad's rod in my hand as I am about to make sure that it is fishing and just then I feel one good gulp so I just hold the rod and a second later I feel a heavy slamola so I set the hook and yell fish and Dad is back in action. This time he tells me that the fish keeps taking line and he claims that it feels like a 100 pound bag of cement. I'm thinking that this is a good thing and after a few minutes we have a chrome bright 40 inch Chinook in the boat for number 4. By this time Dad is very pleased and is having a victory soda to numb the effects of his self diagnosed writer's cramp from filling out his tag - again. About another hour goes by and guess who's rod goes down hard and stays there - yep its Dad's and the new lure has another "heavy bag of cement" that Dad proclaims after he sets the hook. This one is taking a lot of line and Dad declares it a better fighter than the previous 40 inch chromer that I liked so well. We did a hand off and my neighbor did a great job of getting a slighter shorter, but fatter buck to the boat. We went 5 for 5 on Saturday and now Dad will think that it goes that way all the time. Last time out we (Dad wasn't there to witness it) had a bad case of not letting the fish eat long enough so it was nice to have a day when everything goes right. All were caught on Alvin's and Brad's.
Here's the pics.
