I still have some pre tied salmon leaders from there...
No baggies but I still have a couple of these hanging around. Did a show with Larry in 1984. It was fun..
Hmmmmm Jenny, Your bags and my rags!!!!Probably make a killin'..
I didn't get down that way very often but when I did I always stopped by to buy some fishing gear.
Sorry to see them go.

The theme song from fishing the west sometimes plays in my head as I am walking along the river.
So does Merle Haggard doing Big City, thanks to NW Fishing report.

The Larry's Crew in Gresham was great... Mike Duley, Rick Vincent, Dan Joy were outstanding in the tackle department, led by Guy Schorenborn this was a really fun place to purchase tackle and talk fishing. If there's one thing I miss about losing Larry's Sporting Goods it's the relationships missed.

Bill used to work there.
He said it was the most fun job he'd ever had!

I can recall talking with Larry many times. He has a special way of making you feel that you are the only person in his mind when talking with you. Salesmanship? I think so. Nice guy.

If Bill worked at the Gresham Larry's I guess I would like to know his last name.....I'm sure I would know him since I was in there every day for 13 years delivering the US Mail.

Ahh Yes, the Woodland Store. I remember when I was little going in there with my dad. We still go there, but it hasn't been Larry's for years. I still remember my dad introducing us to Larry. He was very nice to us. Him and Brad are both nice people. I hear they will be tearing it down one of these days for new devleopment.
I would love to get some of those old episodes to watch again. I doubt they made tapes to buy did they???? We need another show like that for the area.

I was by far my favorite store growing up in the Beaverton area. I shopped at the Cedar Hills store (bought my first fly rod there). Very sad to see it go.

I worked at the Gresham store in the early 90's while I went to Mt Hood. It was a fun place to work for sure, just think, getting paid to talk fishing.....
Pat, I still have some of those price tag rods too.
I know I've seen every show made, we used to have them playing over head all the time at the tackle counter.

This what I remember about fishing the west. Neat, neat, pretty fish, pretty fish.
We still say "nice fish Larry" in my boat. I know when I would go in the Cedar Hills store they had all the Fishing the West shows on tape and rented them. There probably around somewhere.

And I've got a Penn 85M salmon trolling reel I bought (neon yellow solid fiberglass rod included) for $9.77 from Foster Sporting Goods when they were actually on Foster.  (1965??)
(Yes, dinosaurs still walked the earth then and my kids think the entire world at that time was black and white -- 'cause that's what all the photos show. )
Oh, and I've got about seven full video tapes of Fishing the West episodes (interspersed with a few Doug Lamear adventures.) Stock up on the popcorn, Ma. We're gonna have a Larryfest!

Carp, I believe they used to sell episodes way back when. Have you tried e-bay? luckily I still have about 10 tapes with 6 hours each of his shows. next time I see Brad I'll ask him if they still have access to them.It would be nice to get some on dvd.

I miss the old Fishing the West show and the Lucky Jim Conway show too.
I remember one show on the Deschutes where they caught a summer steelhead and BBQ'd right there on the river bank. How cool was that
I also remember going to the Sportsmans show and bringing home a big bag of free goodies....sigh :depressed: those were the days.

OK...I'll come clean. I was cleaning out my steelhead vest for the first time since 1979 and came across these. Snap swivels were 9 cents and barrel swivels were 8 cents each. Thats not much more then they sell for today.
I bought my first graphite rod ( 9' LCI ) from Larry personally at the Ore City store. Sure do miss the one on one service like we got in the old days.

I can remember when Larry was a clerk at "Foster Sporting Goods"...which was just caddywhampus across from Oak Grove Fred Meyer's on McLoughlin.
Of course I was just a wee little boy back then...but my dad always used to enter in their Salmon Derby for prizes.
Long long time ago...way, way far away!!

FM,
I doubt you saw one like this one!
I mean, this was SOLID fiberglass, through-and-through, and a bilious greenish-yellow which almost glowed in the dark. Must have weighed the equivalent of the Lamiglas loading dock.
After I'd landed my third August coho off the Columbia mouth one day, though, the boat's skipper yelled down from the bridge, "Where'd you get that rod? From a box of Crackerjacks? It sure does catch fish though!"
