Howdy all,
First of all it was an extremely slow dayout there. Out of about a hundred boats we seen only 3 caught the whole day. Mine was one of them. Chome bright 24 lbs of Chinnok.
http://www.ifish.net/uploads/412319270.jpg
The tide was ripping pretty good thru-out the exchange and sea weed was unbearable. We got this one at high slack on herring.
Now for the faint of heart please go read another thread now cause I am gonna make this fairly graphic.
Flavor Nodules Revisited.
There were threads in the past about them white puss pockets and tapioca white doo hickeys. Well let me tell you something. Someone said just cut them out and around and cook it and you will be fine. graemlins/berry.gif The more I tried to cut around them the more I found and was cutting into them and the more puss came out. My stomach started to really turn. I must have seen about 20 of them in just one side of the fish. I called my buddy over there and asked have you ever seen anything like this? He said no. I said I read about this on Ifish. I have never seen anything like this before and hope I never see it again. You can't tell by the fish in the pic anything was wrong with it like a tule. So I ended up throwing the whole fish in the trash. Oh well. What is a guy to do. Say no to flavor nodules and puss pockets.

The trolling machine is ready to go. Infact I was out there today for a spell in front of the Sandy. Seen 3 fish roll. No biters so no nets went flying today. Hope to see you and your new shiny boat out there soon.

Smily, I caught a 28# URB yesterday on the CR that had the same problem. There was nothing on the outside of the fish that visible upon landing it, but once the fillets were cut there were white pill looking things embeded into the flesh.  When popped with the tip of the fillet knife, white liquid went everywhere. I have never seen anything like this. As a result, in the garbage can it went....what a waste!!!
Smiley, whos boat were you on? what kind was it? what time did you launch?...I and a few other IFishers were out there, willierower, tanner (good seeing you tanner) and a few others.
Glad you got a fish, I think its time to seriously investigate what the white puss pockets are, Depoebaydan! get on the ringer with a biologist would you please, this is starting to worry me. (not the first time Ive read about it here)
"flavor nodules"...funny... but in a disturbing way!

saw the same stuff in a Chinook I caught on the Yaquina last weekend. I hadn't heard of this before and I only saw 1 or 2 of them. We ate one fillet and I froze the rest, no side effects but now I'd like to know what it is before we take any fish out of the freezer.

you guys should submit a filet to ODFW or OSU fisheries for analysis...sounds like something we need to examine more closely.

Hi Row Vs. Wade,
I was with Lipriper in his boat and with my daughter. We launched out of Old Mill marina on Saturday about 6:30 am. We did meet Husker out there. He had the only Ifsih sticker I seen out there. Would have like to said hi to willerower and the rest of you guys as well.
Thumper,
What disease would you like to call it. Smily Disease ? Yuk, pass the stale Mayo would you please?

I cannot believe all of you being grossed out by a little pus ( according to C and E ) ball. All you have to do do is cook it on a bed of white rice and add some pasta and serve it hot. Your neighbor will then quit bugging you for fresh Salmon.
My real question is, Where do I go to troll for some of those up river Coho? Does the Ocean really close after Tuesday and is it worth going to Hammond to fish the Saw Dust Pile for a few more weeks?

I just spoke with a biolgist at ODFW, he tells me it's called "Tapioca Disease" and eating fish with the parasite is not harmful to humans. He did ad the he cuts out any larger pustuals, mostly because the "gross him out". (he leaves the small ones)
He assured me there were no harmful effects from eating these fish.

I have caught and eaten plenty of the pus-pocket fish. If I remember correctly, the pockets are always touching or are very near a bone and are never found at random in the thickest parts of the meat. My guess is that it's some sort of calcium deposit or bone deformity. As gross as they are, if the fish is cut up right they are pocket-free and don't taste any different.

09-29-2003, 04:54 PM
Yep , I've seen'em. see my post from about a year ago . Some tips from folks who seemed to know a little about them . Absolutely gross and can sure ruin a dinner when your daughter pops into one at the table !!! ooops

Salmonator,
I don't think you have seen the pus pockets yet like I had seen them. They were at random from tail to gills. About 20 of them on one side. Didn't finish filleting the fish after that. The more slicing when filetting the more oozing that went on. Enough is enough on Oozing!!! YUkkkkkk. into the trash it went.
The calcium thing you seen sounds like part of the back bone you are cutting into. Sure, Trim away and beutiful fillets you will have.
Swampy,
Hope your daughter forgets about the white doo hickeys okay pus balls and doesn't learn to play with them at the table and will still enjoy eating a delicious piece of Salmon from time to
time.

I caught a few springers on the S. Santiam with the very same problem. It seemed to be mostly around the tail area. The little buggers looked like large zits, but on the inside. Needless to say I ended up whittling the fish down until there were no signs of it at all.

if you knew what was running around in the meats you eat, you wouldn't eat meat (or fish) anymore.
i found 'em in a 20# springer this year. freaked the bejeezus out of me. posted here, got my answer, cooked it and ate it. i've eaten most of that fish and i'm still ok. cook thoroughly and push the ones you find to the edge of the plate.

Is it possible there is more than one deformity, condition that could be described like this and more than one potential diagnosis? It surely warrants the help of the "Gurus" @ ODFW. I've cut a few that had similiar pus (sp.) nodules that made me concerned as well , even in Alaska , in the Salt. I always err on the cautious side. It's too bad a guy doesn't get to use that punch on his tag again, when u don't use the flesh, 'eh?

Smily, This is the link my boss gave me...if you read on and down you'll find what is pretty close to what you described in that fish..We got some of this fish at work... Gross stuff..Caused by enzymes of a parasite  Read where it says General information... (white cysts..jelly-like condition of flesh fillets..YUM
Yucky stuff (http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/classes/MB492/kudoawhipps/) Kudoa thyrsites
Hope this helps..well too late for the fish

The Bad Fish
09-29-2003, 08:53 PM
i had a piece of ling cod with a hard spot like you are describing in it, i just cut around it fried it up and didnt taste anything funny. on the other hand i shot an elk 2 years ago that had pockets like that all down the center of her back, some the size of a golf ball. smelled awful if you cut them. the butcher said even domestic cows get them and there was no way i was throwing that meat away.

Hi Louis,
The General info didn't work for me. I would like to still see it if possible. I'll probably do more research on it.
Kruechief,
I read them last fall and Swampy's about a year ago too. Just didn't happen to me till now. I was just wondering how often is this occurance.

Smily, this is all it is...you should have been able to see the text stuff..
ннннннннннн Kudoa thyrsites is an interesting member of this group in that apparently has very broad host specificity, infecting many fish species around the world (Table 1). The parasite infects muscle tissue of the fish host and in some cases causes unsightly white cysts and softening of flesh in fillets (Kabata and Whitaker 1981). In extreme cases infections of the parasite can result in post mortem myoliquefaction where the muscle tissue takes on a jelly-like condition (Fig. 1). This is of concern to the marine fish aquaculture industry where a decrease in flesh quality may represent a significant loss of revenue. This loss of revenue is not solely attributed to downgraded fillets, but also due to the misconception in the marketplace that farmed Atlantic salmon from certain areas represents an inferior product.

I went to McDonalds after a Jethro Tull concert in Portland once and bumped into two of the band members ordering fries; original guitarist Martin Barre was one of the two...
Anyway, I told them what an amazing show I thought it was and tried to get some information about what Ian Anderson was like in real life, but to no avail.
As I ordered my chicken sandwich, they gave a rich description of a pus nodule they once found in some McDonald's meat, and in a rich English dialectic warned, "beware the chicken patty abcess."..
I always laugh now when people mention pus-filled abcesses.

Smily, unfortunately I know exactly what you're talking about. I've cut up close to a dozen or so of them. The gross thing is that you can't always hold the meat up to the light and see the pockets like you can meat worms in bottomfish. I finally started noticing that the pockets stayed very close to either the spine or vertical bones. Maybe that was a fluke. I'll take a picture of the next one (as long as nobody gets sick  )

Ht Buzzo,   I alway's like Jethro Tull. I have read that Ian Anderson has one of the biggest Salmon farms around and does quite well with it. Marting Barre is an outragous guitarist. He is definatley one of my favorites.
Salmonator, These things were found at random and infested with them and just couldn't cut them out. The more I started to cut the more I found the grosser it got. Meat was totaly contaminated.
I had my camera in my pocket, should have taken pictures and the next time I will. This time I was in too much shock after have to throw away a beautiful infested fish like that.

I've got 2 fish with these in the Klickitat over the last two weeks. Pretty nasty stuff. Never seen before, so whats the final outcome. Eat or don't eat? Can't get a straight answer.

I got a Coho at Buoy 10 with this same stuff. The one big pocket was near the spine. I decided to cut that meat away, wash real thoroughly, and give the rest of the fish away as a 'gift.' JUST KIDDING. My fish only had the one pocket so I'll eat the rest.
