Hello, new to sturgeon fishing here and have a few questions. At the dam by the deadline how much lead do most people use? i ran 30oz and was having trouble keeping it down, i think, tough to tell. are the fish everywere or are their certain features i should look for that hold fish. and finally, I want to cut strips from a hold shad for bait, is this effective?

thank you,
cb

cb,
I am going to assume you are fishing for Oversize Sturg. I have never fished that far up, usually stay around "The Fishery."

If you are in the direct current, 48 OZ. is common. If you do not want to fish that much weight you can always move across the river from the boat ramp where the current is much lighter. Or motor down to the "Horse Tail Falls" area, the current is lighter there as well.

As for cutting bait, I have always had good success using a fileted side of one whole shad. I don't think it is necessary to use a whole fish. If you strip it as you mentioned you are probably more likely to hook up more shakers.

That is my 2 cents. Good Luck on your next trip.
