Don't even think about it today. 8' swell and 5' wind waves.

Not pretty!

Dan, Skipper told me the forecast, I was looking at the ocean last night when I spoke to him, it was almost flat with a few caps. Hope I didnt mislead him.

As far as rockfish go, Dans the man to ask. Newport bay produces a few lings close to the mouth on the north jedi, plenty of bass there too which spread deeper into the bay along the north jedi if the mouth is too rough to fish safely. Willierower can give you tips on how to slay the jumbo bullheads too!

Walleyed,
Dan is right. If its today you're considering,.. I wouldn't bother either.
However, under better conditions Boiler Bay Wayside is a great place for bass, lings and the occasional Cabezon. Especially the rock "ledge" on the south side and the point on the northwest side.
The mussel shoals in fron of the sea wall right in town can be productive too when the sea(s) cooperate and the tide is at low.
There are a couple more, but directions can be tricky.
For tackle, be sure you have some 1/2 to 1oz jigheads with short and long shank hooks and some 3-4-6" grubs. Dan's awesome stuff is available in the 76 station on the north end of Depoe Bay. Go for the 3" shad (bass killer) and a few of the 4" chovies. I hear herring is the best bait this time of year.
Good luck, have fun and be safe.
Maybe we can hook up one of these days and show you the other areas Dan has shown us,... Or maybe you'll get lucky and Dan himself will be available to give you the "guided tour"!!

Saturday was perfect.....almost no swell, little wind. You could walk right down to the rocks at Depoe and not get wet.

Course didnt catch anything but a greenling and small pile perch, but weather was nice

DBD, LS and COR, I would jump at the chance to go fishing off the rocks with you guys. I tried to make the couple trips DBD set up earlier but couldn't make either one. I have taken the info and fished pretty well off both Depoe and Boiler Bay, but would like to learn more from the experts. Anytime on the tail end of the week works for me. I'm lucky enough to get Thur, Fri and Sat off every week, and Wed every other week. Send me an e-mail and lets get together

Thanks

Next time I will be at the coast will be the weekend for Ifishstock.......if the weather is OK might try off the Barview jetty earlier that day before the BBQ. If any of you guys are going to that, maybe we can do something there

cirrhosis-of-the-river,

I was down there at 5:15am (boat ramp) to see if either of you silly guys would show up. Natta.

I wasn't planning going anywhere but just thought I would meet you if you showed per your email.

You didn't mislead him and when I got home at 10:15pm I called and left a msg on his cell phone telling him not to waste a drive down here that you don't go out of Depoe or anywhere else for that matter with a 8' and 5' forecast.

I would imagine the bar was closed to 40' and under.

The big boys charters went. Rock & Roll!

Send me your phone#'s again neighbor so as I can me you. I don't know if I have it still or not.

Good point about the jetty. I didn't think of that one. Even if they had to back track all the way back to the marina jetty's there is fish to be had. That is usually a night fishery however but sometimes some decent size bass.

The lighthouse might have been a possibility. Probably protected from the wind and wind waves but don't know about the swell.

We're getting into the season where fishing off the rocks can be real tough (August). That goes for fishing bottom fish in the boats also. One year ('97 I believe) the bottom fishing never slowed down. That was one year out of the nine that I have lived here. Maybe we will get lucky this year.

Fish_N_Russ,

Email me next time you're coming down and if I got time we'll get together again.

Good to hear from you Jamie. In another 5 weeks the early strain coho will be in the Toutle and then the Kalama, Lewis, etc. The Elocoman probably won't have fish that early untill it rains. Hope you guys can join me especially towards mid October when the late strain Cowlitz coho start returning.

Chow.
