In an effort to do my part for the wholesomeness of the entire Willamette Valley watershed, I agree that on Tuesday, August 19 in the Salem Sportman's Warehouse area parking lot between the hours of 8-9 am, I will pay 10 cents for each and every dead pike minnow(DPM) ( must be 7" or over) delivered. I'll even accept Columbia River DPM's, no questions asked.

I'm tempted to limiting it to the first 1000 fish or $100, because of the anticipated excitement. Although, the thought of what I could do with perhaps 10,000 DPM is intriguing, maybe even worth the $1000 it costs me.

It would also be worth the carniverous weight of 10,000 PM eating 10 smolt/year(a fictitious number(one I madeup)) which = 100,000 more smolt out to the COlumbia. GIven a potential return of 5% from there; that's 5000 more adults. I'm not sure how much a returning adult salmon/stlhd is worth, but I believe it's more than the 20cents/fish invested.

So 10cents, in reality probably won't get me 10,000 DPM, even at the generous offering of 7" or better. Anybody else want to throw their dimes on the table ? graemlins/stupid.gif It would be a great gag and guaranteed fun time. Maybe we could even attract some media attention for the underappreciated Willamette River Pikeminnow whacker.

What does a guy do with 10,000 DPM.

Not sure of the legality Brine of private fish bounty programs...but I recall 7 or 8 years ago a private individual put up $50,000, I think it was, to pay for dead coyotes from Hart Mtn area...thru an OHA chapter or member. That program was a failure on biological and political fronts and ended before many pelts were brought in, as I recall.

The dams on the Willamette and the river's snag removal (there once was an average of one large snag per every 3 feet of river reach length...now they are mostly gone), channelization and revetments are all Corps of Engineers projects...and all contribute to loss of habitat...and maybe to increased *********. Would be nice if Congress authorized funding to extend the ********* bounty up the Willamette...but don't hold your breath.

Catch Sunday's column in the sports section and keep an eye out for men in blue.

Brine,
I'm assuming this is a sarcastic jab at fraud in the bounty program ... certainly no one would knowingly sell a fish for ten cents when they could get $6 or $8 for it through the legitimate bounty program, right? Tell me you're joking!

Pete, the bounty program is not valid for fish on the W, just in the big C.

BTW, if you catch one of these buggers and are not going to turn them in just take a skissors and chop the head off. Too often i see people release these things living. Kill them!!!

Ok, apparently there are some legality issues involved here that are going to prevent me from going through with this goofy idea. The intent was to say that if the system works on the Columbia why not on the Willamette. If money is the only issue, it seems like small potatoes to the amount of good that could be done. Besides things seemed like they were getting a little blah; so, why not stir the pot a little bit.

Brine,

If you want to do your part in killing some PMs drop me a line in the next 20 minutes and you can join us for some fish killing on the Willamette.

Since there is nothing better to do for today. My room mate and I are gonna catch some PMs and use them for sturgeon bait...........
