It would be great to get some info on possibly guiding in Alaska for the summer.
Would someone with a little Alaska experince care to help me out ( Marty, Travis, Captain J, David, ?????) and answer a few questions or point me in a direction of a place needing a guide for the summer  ?

Thanks a ton,
Chris Nordling

I think you are out of luck if you didn't have a license last year. That's what I heard, but I don't know for sure.

Maybe that's just for the Kenai?

Jen-

I'm thinking that was just for the Kenai, but I'm not sure either.

Thanks for the PM from the fella who sent it. I appreciate the input you sent, and intend to follow up on a few of your suggestions.

Chris, You have mail. As far as I know the Kenai is the only restricted guide area. Lots of opportunity.

Kenai Parks lifted the guide restriction and it is wide open as usual.

Just need the qualifications that they require to get the license.

Coast Guard license
Insurance
first aid card
fishing license
commercial permit
register with the burrough for tax purposes

And some more that I can't remember.

Oh ya, Out of state guides license was $1,400.00 last year.

There are guides services that I am sure that need guides to fill spots they are already booked. Sould not be a problem working on the Kenai/Kasilof Rivers during the summer. I did it for 23 years and just retired.

The biggy Chris is the CG license. Lodges will not hire unless you got it as far as I know. Check your e-mail too.

I wuided for Rainbow King Lodge in '94. Great fun. Give them a call as they often hire "green" guides. Most hiring is completed in March though as lodges are poised to open in June. Your a bit behind, but call, call and call some more. Speak well and be courteous. Good luck.
