I used to fish that area every summer. For cats it doesnt take anything real special. I used large trout type poles or steelhead size rods and reels, 10# test line with a sliding 3/4 oz egg sinker #7 snap swivel and around a size 2 hook most of the time. Hook size differs with diff types of bait I used though. Anywhere from #4's to 2/0 hooks. Leader length has never seemed to matter much. About 18" is about right for me. Bait I used was chicken livers <messy>, worms, shrimp, and some cut bait. I always did the best on just plain worms. A good spot, if you follow the Burnt river all the way till it hits the Res. there is a big left hand corner I liked to fish anywhere in that area but did the best off of the railroad side of the inlet. If the Crappy are biting you might take along some smaller rods and crappy jigs. Fish them right at 50 yrds or so off the upper end of the same inlet area. If you can see the culverts that alow the water to go under the railroad tracks, I did the best fishing right off the top of the upper most culvert. I liked to cast small mister twister green or white curl tail grubs in the 1" or 1 1/2" size and just slow retrieve till they hammer it. Once you find the right depth and the bite is on its non stop action. Ive also picked up alot of cats this way.

Dont be afraid to try a bobber for the cats either. Right along the banks, vary the distance and leader lenght till you find them. Smallies will also hammer it if they are there.

Well this post is getting long so e-mail me if ya like and I can tell you more. I loved fishing that area but havent been able to for the past few years. This was also a little later in the summer though around the end of June.

Ray,
I've posted several times on the warmwater fish board, or bass board (whatever) about fishing there. I used to live about 45 minutes from Huntington.

I use my lamiglass and Cabela's steelie rods, my 6500 reels, 15 lb test line. Run a sliding sinker or slider with a drop sinker above a swivel, then a 12" leader and a #2 to 2/0 super sharp hook.

Fish with worms or fresh crappie (or pikeminnow or other fresh cutbait). I like to fish the eddy lines around Huntington. Farther down in the lake I like to fish the graveled flats formed by the water rushing down the gullys. Hope this helps.

You now have to post a report...

We used to fish this area every memorial day for years. Take some sand shrimp! By far the best bait we ever use for cats.

Our best fishing was just up river from Farwell Bend state park. There is a little bridge that crosses a little slough of the river. We would park just on the upriver side of that bridge and fish out there. Sometimes the water was up to the road and sometimes you had to walk 200 yards but it made no difference if you just casted as far as you could.

We use a sliding sinker set up right on the bottom, no dropper line with a double snell hook set up. Sand shrimp and or crappie guts was a killer.

Also there is an access road that runs down river right out of Huntington, we explored that area for several miles downstream and found some really fantastic holes. I would tell you exactly where they are but I don't think I could find them today.

Anyway email me if you have more questions, I could probably drum up some more info.

if your going to huntington to fish for catfish here is a tried and true spot to fish. the burnt river runs into the snake at huntington. this is a great place to catch kitties. right where the two rivers meet there is a place to park and fish.

i recommend the following.
i trout rod with at least 15# test (biggest we caught was just shy of 20#) use a 1 to 11/2 ounce weight on the end of your line and then tie up two hook about two feet apart. use two kinds of bait. don't use stink bait use nightcrawlers and a cut up fish of some kind. and you can catch them at any time of day. if that spot is taken drive down the river to a place called swedes landing and fish that area. bigger cats down there just not as much action.

tip of the day
get a battery or electric fillet knife it makes cleaning very easy
