 THIS THREAD IS IN NO WAY MEANT TO BASH "GUIDES CHOICE EGGS OR ANYONE WHO CARRIES OR DISTRIBUTES THEIR PRODUCT.

With that out of the way. My name is Michael Hogan, and I have never caught a fish with GC eggs, have you? I was wondering if anyone has had any good days with them.
The thing is when I first started fishing I used them all the time. Not once did I use them successfully. Was it me or the eggs???

MH

P.S. Does anyone know who is behind this company. Or things like how long have they been around etc....

Can't say for sure, Bankbound....but I CAN say that Amerman's are worth the extra $$$. Because they will help you put fish in the fishbox!

D&G bait co puts them out. There not the best, but not the worst either. They do catch fish, and they are readly available. No real other providers in the portland area. Buy your own cure such as amerman or others

Bankbound- I don't think it is you. I have noticed the same thing. I used GC eggs in the past because the were cheapest and I honestly did not catch any fish them. All my fish came by different methods. This year I bought Amermans because of all the talk about them on this site and I started catching fish on eggs.

Now the only eggs I fish with are my own, or Amermans.

Last year on the Wind I used the GC boraxed eggs to catch my first couple of hens and then went with my own cure from there. They didn't seem to be a problem for springers that were willing to bite. I tried to enhance the GC eggs with my own scents (maybe I should phrase that differently  ), but it didn't work.

are there other choices of eggs readily available in the portland area for sale? or are you restricted to the gc eggs?

I bought some at fisherman's O.C. last week and cought a very nice chub. The eggs there now look very good. But at other times the quilty can change.

Go to the front page of Ifish, look under Oregon Guides, contact Scott Amerman (by phone or email) and he can send you a quart of the best eggs I've ever used, right to your front door.

They're the ONLY eggs I'll buy!

Hope that helps..... tight lines...

I have used them to catch a few fish then make my own. Worked ok for silvers on the Kalama.. The frozen ones in borax are better... still GC though!

i have never caught a fish on GC eggs, but i don't catch many fish to begin with and tend to shy away from eggs in general just because of the mess. however, i will say that if you're going to buy them, get the vacuum packed eggs if you can. they are much more durable than what you get in the tubs. perhaps "juicing up" GC eggs with your own scent combo would make them more productive.

I have caught many steelhead on GC eggs in the past on the North Santiam when I first started fishing for steelhead up there. I now cure my own eggs and they work much better. I know they catch fish but you will catch more if you use "less commercial" type eggs.

Thats my .02

I have made mention of this on one of my other posts. I have only caught one fish on G.C eggs and it was today on the upper Clack. In fact I'm not sure if it was the eggs or the Shrimp that enticed the 15lb Nook to bite. For years I've used them without success. I was only using them today because I ran out of mine and a buddy had these G.C eggs. Try the Amerman eggs. SPACE

I've caught fish on GC eggs before. My next batch will come from Amerman's though! Heard tons of good stuff about those, and i'm ready to catch some fish and get out of this slump i'm in!

Yes I caught a summer steelhead on Guide's Choice eggs. Pictured here on my avatar. Buddy spotted him and couldn't get him to bite his boraxed eggs so I caught him. Funny thing was I bought a quart jar the year before and they were flat so I took them back for a refund. Buy a tub not the jar and sprinkle some borax on them to make less goey. Now I cure my own eggs in borax so I don't buy very much. A change is always good.

Guides Choice products are produced and distributed by D&G Baits, a local company owned and operated by Dan Pickthorne and his wife. They also market a wide variety of other bait products. Nice folks. In terms of catchability, those eggs would, for me, rank as my #3 choice, behind my own (Sure-Cure, follow the directions, then lightly borax, better only because they are fresh and unfrozen), then Amerman's wet eggs(superb!).

Of course none of this includes Ramstrong's eggs, which should be outlawed as unfair to fishies.

Hey guys. Guess what? I deliverd 24 jars of Amerman Salmon Eggs today at the Delta Park GI Joes. I hope that this helps.

I have only tried Guides choice for Coho a few years ago when I was getting started back up here. I caught a grand total of 1 fish on those eggs. If I had to choose, I'd fish hardware before I fished the D&G stuff. With Grant making the above post. If I was out of eggs and needed some badly, I'd drive to Delta park and buy the Amerman eggs.

Jack, I told you the secret to my eggs.

Have bought several jars of GC eggs in the past and have not caught even one fish with them. Whats the price difference between Amermans and GC? I usually tell my friends to bring their own eggs when I take them fishing and invariably they stop off and pick up a jar of GC eggs. If Amermans were more readily available I'd suggest them instead.

A few years back I bought G.C. eggs due to the only thing available. The plastic containers are usually filled with eggs that feel and resemble PLAY-DOH, and will catch jacks when there in thick, but I have never caught anything else using them. If you are impelled to use them purchase them by the jar, and really look the jars over. Try to find one with eggs being of medium size. Then cut to sizes of a .50 cent piece and lay them out skin side down on PLAIN WHITE paper towels in a large piece of tupperware and apply scent to them..Sardine is my first choice but use what your confident in, and then put a lid on and place in frig for 24 hrs. I have used this method with some success but not like home cured eggs I use today.

I Was in G.I. JOES last night and there is a small brown refrigerator between the 2 bait coolers there in the back of fishing section. Itwas loaded with AMERMAN EGGS in quart jars. Also on top of the fridge is the Amerman Cure. Try them under a bobber!!

Bankbound,
I have had limited success with GC eggs using them on several different occassions. They looked good and seemed to be fine but didn't perform all that well for me. On the other hand, Amerman eggs have produced consistently for me. I can fish them with confidence. If I'm fishing Amerman eggs and not catching fish I know I need to change something else. Obviously, that is a tremendous advantage. I have nothing against the people I've dealt with at D&G but.........get something you can have confidence in.

I use my own cures. Ammermans eggs are even better with the extra ingredient that they shake them in before they throw them out.

GC eggs are the best I caught 4 chubs and a blue gill last spring on them first time I ever got 5 in the boat....I would highly recommend them graemlins/dork.gif

I've had mixed success on GC. I have limited out once on springers on GC about 1992, and I hooked 3 that day. It's been years since I used it though, since I have good home cured fall chinook eggs.

As far as store bought eggs, you will have good luck with Amermans, As for GC, I used a jar once about 10 years ago and skunk was the result. You can catch a springer on a crappy egg if it is presented right. If you want to catch lots of fish use a good bait!

Is this something added to Eggs in the boat before using, or in the cure before packaging? Would like to hear more.

eggs shaken in some kind of white powder in the boat before casting. We would all like to know what it is - Maybe its just borax - Maybe not
