one of the problems with seals is they've lost their fear of man, they haven't been hunted for years. gods know they aren't on the endangered lists. look at any dock down at the coast you'll see seals lying on docks ,boats and anywhere else they please, i know of several boats damaged by the shear wieght of 4 or 5 seals sleeping on the bow of a boat. but if you disturb them or try to protect your property WATCH OUT. all this and not to mention steelhead and salmon kills.
so what i think is the state of oregon should do is sell hunt tags , not alot maybe just 10 a year , maybe a lottery. florida does this for their problem gators. i would love to have a pelt for hat or mittens, the meat is either yours or sell to oversea fish buyers.after a few hunts seals like any wild creature would regain a wise respect for man and vear away at the sight or sound. thats my 2 cents, what do you think? c .b. graemlins/icon_argue.gif

And no sissy guns or knives...just mano-a-animo...tooth to the tooth. So next time you see a seal or sea lion, strip to the skivies and dive in after him...teach him (or her) a lessson they'll never forget.

PS Give us prior notice on Ifish so we can get our digital cameras ready. Can't wait to see if the sea lions prefer to show their catch in the vertical or horizontal shot.

b.l. could i at least duke it out on shore, maybe one rock in hand, don't forget david and goliath. also in this man against beastathon if i have to get down to my shives could it be in the summer, these chilly bones can't take the cold.
and yep i know that the general public would cry bloody murder at the thought of the cute seals being hunted--but the $'s raised could go to fisheries and other enhancments. graemlins/applause.gif so i guess these seals will be like the bunnies and keep multipling.
also i was thinking that if ol fish breath did win the fight, i can see the headlines now"local fisherman killed by rogue lion", when will it stop?

Chillybones,
so i guess these seals will be like the bunnies and keep multipling. <font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">You might want to check the marine mammal population estimates today vs. pre-Europeans in North America.
My guess is you'll see numbers similar to the salmon...maybe 2-5% of their original numbers.

Take it from me...YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE CHILLYBONES IN HIS SKIVIES. I agree with CB though, the seal lion impact on the salmon should be acknowledged and addressed. Maybe we could get some of those Navy dolphins armed with torpedoes to take them out! graemlins/idea.gif

While fishing up on the Fraser last year for sockeye, I was talking to a local(canadian) about the increasing seal populations and he said that always around hunting season their tends to be alot of seals following victim to lead poisoning! Couldnt stop laughing after he said that straight faced to me!

Bring back KEIKO The Killer Whale. I bet he would love some fresh seal.

I agree that they have lost their fear of man and they are thicker than they used to be. Is hunting them the answer, I don't know nor do I believe the general public would support this. They are the ones who voted out using hounds to hunt bear and cougar as well as banned baiting bear. To get them to support something of this magnitude you need a large media campaign to show the damage and fish mortality that they cause. Keep an eye on the ghost net situation on other threads and see how that progresses. That will pretty much show you what can work given the right procedure.

I'd sure like to see a program that targeted the specific sealions that are harrassing fishermen. I have lost two fish to seals this week. Almost lost one more. Film at 11:00am.
I'd like to see it legal to use rubber bullets to shoot seals that have stolen or are stealing fish. Maybe you could use paintballs to mark them or something. Then, if there are specific seals that are doing most of the harrassing, frankly, I'd like them killed.

Do they make a lead paint ball?

Just being devil's advocate, here... Who's stealing Who's fish?
C'mon guys, I know it is aggravating, but these creatures are only doing what comes naturally. Why take it so personally?
I'll refrain from getting into the discussion as to whether the populations should be reduced as I have not enough data to back any opinions. However, I will point out that I've heard folks refer to the population of bald eagles in Alaska as a "nuisance", too.
Food for thought.

silver hilton, your right , remember herman up at ballerd locks. i'm not saying an "open "season on all seals , but with out a doubt there are some "problem"seals that would not be missed, and like i said early when the rest of the herd sees one or two of their cronies snuffed they will steer a wide birth from man and he's equipment.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Your point is well taken. We shouldn't get mad about this, but I think we might reasonably take action. I guess I feel that we might be justified because at least some of the sealions are directly targeting fish on lines. That makes us competitors, and, in the inherent self centeredness of the human race, it makes me view them as a nuisance.
Where I was fishing yesterday, it looked like sea lions stole about 13% of the angler's catch - 3 out about 25 fish. That's a relatively serious impact, especially when you are talking about a fish that may take the investment of several days and some serious dollars to catch.
Because of the current law, sealions have a considerable advantage in the fight over the fish. I'd like to see some non-lethal means available for dissuading the sealions. And if those fail, well, I'm an old Eastern Oregon boy, sometimes you have to just shoot the SOB.
My 2 cents.
Seals and sea lions didn't last long in freshwater when the natives harvested them for food and hides. Seal tastes like liver soaked in rancid holigan (smelt) oil. Sea lion is better, like beef soaked in rancid holigan oil.

Given a choice between chasing a fish that's running from you, or one that's stuck on the end of a line, which would you choose?
Can't do anything about the ********* that eat the belly out of your bait when you're sturgeon fishing, either. It's life.
BUT... I agree... if a seal or sealion is causing property damage or threatening human life, there needs to be something done. Who's going to take up this sword? I've said it before, I'll say it again... it does little good to spend our energy sitting behind the computer screen complaining to eachother.

I have to admit that I have on occasion seen a seal/sealoin or two and wondered what they tasted like.
They are known to eat more than the fishies... faithful dogs have jumped in chasing their ball never to return. :depressed:
No they don't make lead paintballs, on the otherhand paintballs can be frozen...
I think that Bob Rivers has pretty much captured the experience in his song "Sealions Eat Tonight" (http://www.twistedtunes.com/show/vault/alpha.asp?Var=S)
