After thinking about my catch rates and how I approach spending my fishing time, I got to wondering how the rest of you work it.

What percentage of the time do you fish the water that you know well verses spending time looking for new spots?

The reason I ask is that it seems like crowds gather where crowds are. It has always seemed to me that there is a lot of water that holds potential, but never seems to get worked over.

For myself, I tend to like to fish water I don't know. I like the exploration and the challenge of the unknown. The effects of this show up with blank spots on my tag, but I still really like fishing new water. Is this stupid? graemlins/dork.gif

No that's not stupid there are loads of new places to see thay you can only find by exploring...you never know you might find your next hotspot any day.

If they aren't biting where I am I will chase after a different spot. I think a guy who moves around will find the fish and know where to go or what type of water to go to in a given situation. Tried and true is good too if you can consistantly catch fish.-Lem

I guided for 3 years and people watched were I fished. So when I would take clients other people would be in the holes. Which would force me to find other holes. It was ok with me I liked to experment. Some times good and some times not.

It really depends on my mood. Some days I will stay in a 100 yd stretch all day if it is putting out, for example other days I 'll start at Stayton and fish to Packsaddle (hitting random spots along the way). It really depends I still move even if I am catching fish. Boredom is my mistress. I swam across the SF of the santiam one day out of boredom.. Had 1 fish just and just wanted to explore ended up landing 3 more once I got across. (not Reccomended in any way)
