Been lurking for the last couple months and finally decided to get a story up here.
My father had started me on sturgeon fishing about 12 years ago. Our first trip to this hole had produced a 7+ footer (SmokerChic's frist time story from a couple months back) so I was always anxious to get back there and try and hook into another one. Other then the big one though, we had only caught a couple shakers here and there when I went along, but it was always fun.
I get home from school one day and we were talking about heading out, so I run down to the basement to get my pole ready so I can be in the water as soon as soon as we get there. So I pull out a 3-way swivel and get to tying my knot's. I was very "un-experienced" shall we say at tying knots and ended up tying up my hook with 3 basic over and through the loop knots thinking this would be plenty.
So we get out there and I was the first to get my pole in the water because everyone else still needed to tie and bait up. After a short while, sure enough I get a tap on my pole. I set the hook and fish on! Now this was by far the biggest fish I had ever hooked down there, and I was positive it was at least a keeper if not bigger. So I ended up fighting it for about 20 min's or so and I'm sure its just a couple yards off the bank. So I'm jerking and pulling trying to get the sucker in when all of a sudden... gone. arg!!! I lost it!!! So I reel in my line and sure enough, no hook.
So now a-days, I'm always double and even triple checking my knot strength before even thinking of getting my line in the water. Always good to learn from ones mistakes I guess.
